As a BT this is not something I grew up with, and I have B"H never had occasion to need to do this (not even sure what the "this" is - a bracha and then a donation? Once? Repeatedly? What else?).
My question is can it be done for someone else? My mother has either misplaced or had stollen some very valuable and sentimental things and is extremely upset. My daughter suggested this to her, but I assume it works only if you believe it is going to work -- and she's definitely not the type. Can I do this on her behalf that she should find the lost objects? And if so, can someone give me some direction on specifics?

Best to give 25¢ to a reb mayer baal Hanes Pushka. If you don’t have put in a regular pushkah and as you drop it in say:
Eloika dirav mayer Aneini
Say it three times and have in mind to find the lost object.
