First birthday party making for my 5 year old, do we need to give each kid a party bag to take home after the party? Is that what everyone does?

Yes.

But you can make it however big or small you want.

No I give small prizes usually connected to the “theme”. You can give party bags but it’s not a must.

I think parents would appreciate if you don't give additional treat bags.

So what do people usually put in them? Like what’s considered normal?

You could literally get stuff from the dollar tree like small bubbles, sticker by numbers, stickers, pencils with cute erasers hair accessories if for a girl and one treat. Doesn’t have to be anything crazy

Yes all these.

Or a balloom, a packet, lolly?
You can also wrap up the slice of birthday cake on naplin and put in the bag.

Get a really small bag;)

One of my friends gave small succulents out instead of party bags. It was so cute and we could teach our kid about gardening instead of stuffing them with junk.

I’ll be the dissenting opinion- you don’t need to give out anything. No nosh. No prizes. Parents will be thrilled.
