Who else is following this?

Apparently three astronauts are now stranded on the international space station since their return to home capsule has been hit by a micro meteoroid (while docked) and obtained a leak.

Russians are rushing to prepare a replacement capsule to be sent hopefully by late February. This will however mean the the three astronauts will have to stay up there for an additional six months, as the regular flight schedule has been kicked off it’s tracks (by supplying them with the capsule needed for the next flight).

While it is relatively not an urgent emergency, it means that the three astronauts are being left without a way home for at least until late February, should an emergency occur in that time. This dangerous possibility is currently being investigated.

The crew consists of 2 cosmonauts and one American astronaut.

Wow. First time hearing about this. This is my nightmare situation and why I have absolutely NO desire to go to space.

I recently read Seveneves by Neal Stephenson. (this is not a recommendation, the author can get graphic on many levels)

Nowhere near the same setup but couldn't help thinking about the similarities of being stranded in the vastness of space. It's a minor plot point but in the book a Russian cosmonaut is effectively abandoned in a capsule outside a space station and is only saved through some ingenuity on the part of a crew member of the space station.

I'm davening that all involved in the real life situation get back to planet Earth safely.

I love that your name is momof2. That was such a Jewish mother question!
They may be grown up cosmonauts capable of flying themselves to the depths of outer space but mom worries if they have enough to eat. Of course it’s a valid question but I couldn’t help smiling picturing a Yiddish Mama flying them out a care package of chicken soup and rogelach.

This reminds me of the other cosmonaut who was stranded in space for ten months when the soviet union dissolved https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wik.....kalev

My guess is that they prepare for all worst case scenarios and take enough extra.
Honestly I don’t think it’s terrible to be stuck in space longer than anticipated.
What’s a difference if you float around in nothingness for 6 months or 12? With no deadlines to meet and and no family obligations, I think it’s pretty cool!

Aren't they limited in weight allowances? I don't think it's so simple to just take along extra food...
