I was in the pharmacy on Friday waiting for a prescription for my daughter and I see this girl standing behind me in an aisle trying to look inconspicuos (sp?). She was wearing her hood from her coat over her head trying to sort of hide her face and just leaning on one shelf and just waiting. I couldn't figure out what she wanted and the person behind the counter kept on telling me a few more minutes, a few more minutes. Meanwhile this girl is not moving anywhere. It wasn't as if I was blocking her from going to the register. While I'm trying to figure out what her reason might be for just standing around and waiting, dd decided that she's very thirsty so I turned down a different aisle to get a drink. When I came back towards the counter I saw what it was that she wanted to buy. A package of maxi pads. She must've been embarrassed that I was standing there and would see her purchase so I guess she waited until I left the counter and didn't see. She walked up to the counter, pulled the package out from underneith her coat and paid for it all the while looking around trying to make sure nooone sees. For her benefit so not to embarrass her further I just stayed in that aisle and waited for her to leave all the while smiling and remembering those days in the beginning when I needed pads and there wasn't enough at home and I needed to buy a package!
Reminds me of when I need bedika cloths and don't have enough at home, this pharmacy sells them. I too make sure there's noone around (especially men!!) when buying them!!

LOL!
I remember those days when we would ask for another bag at the pharmacy because one was too transparent.
The most mortifying experience, though, must've been when a friend of mine got her 1st period... at our school concert's dress rehearsal!
She told me, and we went together to one of our teachers. She drove us to the nearest pharmacy, which was closing up already. We had to tell them it's very important, we need one item and that's it.
Of course, we couldn't look around the store until we found what we needed, so we had to tell the workers to bring us a pack of pads...
Oyyy, the memories.

you reminded me of a really funny story!!! I was buying pads at this pharmacy and the person behind the counter automatically put the pads in a brown paper bag and a regular bag. She right away tells me: you know, I like you jewish girls coming in and asking me to brown bag your personal care products. Who has to know that youre having a period now. All those non jewish people coming in and they just don't care who knows. It's as if they want to advertise to everyone: I"M HAVING A PERIOD NOW! Good luck with your period!!

On a similar note, I have to be the one to buy my dh's Viagra. He's too . I have no shame! But they are very nice about it also and put it straight into an opaque bag. Can you imagine walking around with Viagra showing through the bag?

My mother bought my pads til I got married. the first couple of years after I was married I was so embarrassed, I'd hold it down and pay for it faaaast. Years later, the shame over that disappeared, to be replaced by a new shame... pregnancy tests... BH our pharmacy keeps all ovulatoin kits, pregnancy tests, tampons, birth control, yeast infection creams, lubricants and bedikah clothes in a separate, custoemr accessible area behind the counter, so you can just step behind the counter, pick out what you want, brown bag it immediately and pay for it with no one seeing.

I remember stealing money from my bro's coin collection so that I could purchase some pads. I did NOT tell my mom that I had gotten my period since she'd make it a family affair!

Thank God I had (still do ) an older sister to teach me the ropes.
She stood outside the bathroom and guided me while I tried my first tampon!

really? why would they assume that? I never buy essential supplies just when I need them. I stock up when they're on sale-- doesn't everyone?--and I never, ever allow the stock to get below a certain level. I do try to get the female cashiers, and if it's male cashiers I don't look them in the eye. dh says the cashiers couldn't care less, which is probably true, but I care!

When I was in dorm, I started a gemach. I let all my friends know that I keep a whole bunch of extra pads in my drawer and if they ever need they are welcome to take and replace at their convience (or not).
I also remember being really embarrased, but in truth I still try to buy pads and bedika cloths along with some other items so it doesn't seem like I'm buying out of desperation. And anyhow now that I think of it, do you really blame her? I'd also be embarassed if I were 12 years old. You don't usually see girls that age alone in the pharmacy so she does kinda stick out.

I would never expect my daughter to buy pads on her own. I always make sure theres a nice supply in the bathroom. If it sometimes runs low, my daughter tells me.

I was one of the first in my class to get my period. In those immature 7th grade days, everyoen was curious 'who had it laready' and the ones who did guarded it as a state secret. In camp one girl came over tearfully to tell me she got her first period and needed pads. I gladly gave her some. She burst out giggling and told me it was just a ruse to find out who had brought pads with them to camp. babies!!!!
