A lot of people here will probably be unfamiliar with Charlie Daniels, who died at the age of 83 today. He was a major country musician known for his string playing.
His most famous song, The Devil Went Down to Georgia, is a unique piece of Americana. Because Imamother is somewhat international, we've often had conversations about why Americans think a particular way or have attachments or sentiments that seem odd to others.
The Devil Went Down to Georgia is basically a three-minute history of American culture. The music itself draws directly from the Scottish-Irish history of the South and Southeast. The story is about the taking risks and responding with defiance to defend one's honor in the face of overwhelming odds. If you understand this song, you'll understand the American psyche much better.
So if you listen to secular music, even in just an academic manner, this is an important piece.

Devil went down to Georgia. He was looking for a soul to steal.
I had a country phase
Then a rap phase
Then electronica
But my heart always belonged to big band
