I'm looking to buy beds. I am not interested in a high-riser. I'm also not interested in Ikea, since we have some of those and they are not holding up as well as I would have expected. I'm not sure if I want twin beds or a bunk bed (maybe also a trundle?). I'm not looking to spend a fortune, but I would like decent quality. I have no idea how to go about doing this. Any suggestions would be welcome!

I would advise you to get a bunkbed that can be separated into 2 separate beds.
something like this:

most of these also have matching trundles that you can buy so that you have a third bed to pull out, whether you are using it as 2 or bunked up.

Some people like "captain's beds" with the drawers underneath. You might put wheel casters on it so it can move around for cleaning underneath. This one seems to have both a trundle and three drawers for about $360 unfinished. A dark stain wears better and looks more masculine than this natural color. You can stain it yourself. You can also stain it after you have had the bed a year, with just bare wood.

Here is a captain's bed for $170, but you still need a mattress. A "platform bed mattress".

Inflatable beds work too. Cheaper, for sure. This looks comfortable, for $150. It is 25 inches off the floor.
