I have a really beutifull jacket - delicate material etc. I put it away in a plastic bag and I haven't taken it out for over a year - last week when I took it out it smells like "stuff that was put away for a long time" u know what I mean? I left it out but the smell doesn't go away - any suggestions of how to get rid of the smell without washing or drycleaning (I don't trust the local cleaners)?

Never spray perfume directly on clothing unless you would like to create a nasty stain. Even Febreze will stain if sprayed too close and too heavily so the fabric is actually wet, not just lightly misted.

Febreze is the way to go if you don't have a few months for the garment to air out. Or you can try putting it in a big box and sprinkle baking soda or a mixture of baking soda and cornstarch all over it, leave for a few weeks and brush or vacuum off the baking soda.

Avoid storing clothes in plastic bags--fabric needs to breathe. next time take an old white pillowcase, cut a little hole in the top center for a hanger, and use that instead of a plastic bag. and never leave non-washable clothes in storage for extended periods of time without taking them out for an occasional airing. (washables are not a problem b/c if they do develop odors you can just re-wash them. )also do not store clothes for an extended period of time without washing or dry-cleaning first. any invisible body oils or spills can oxidize over time and create stains that will be difficult if not impossible to remove.
