In camp once we bought little terra cotta pots. 2 per kid, connected at their bases, so that the opening of one is the holder for a tea light, and the opening of the other is face down on the table) I think we modge podged little squares of colored tissue paper onto it to decorate it. or maybe broken pieces of pretty mirror/glass?

I don't have any specific ideas for you but please double and triple check to be VERY VERY SURE that whatever you use is fireproof. Nothing paper or wooden should go anywhere near candles, ever. I have seen more than one child's poorly-planned project go up in flames and it's only chasdei Hashem that they didn't take the house with them.
