Do you wake your child up to make (pee) at night? I thought my 3.5 year old was night trained, because he’d been waking up dry for a while, but lately I find that he wakes up wet almost every morning. I try to limit drinking before bedtime etc. When I mentioned something about a diaper, he got offended Once I tried waking him up before I went to sleep (about 3 hours after he went to sleep) but he is a deep sleeper and it’s very hard to wake him, and almost impossible to get him to walk to the bathroom and concentrate on actually making. Should I force him? Should I buy pullups? Should I just continue to wash his sheets and PJs hoping he will outgrow it soon? What do you do?

This could of been me writing this (except that mine is a girl.) I am going through the same exact thing with my 3 1/2 yr old daughter. For about a month I have been taking her to the bathroom every night before I went to sleep, and she woke up dry in the morning. Then all of a sudden she started waking up wet although I took her to the bathroom before I went to sleep. This is going on now for about 2 weeks and last night I decided to just give up and I put her on a pull-up. I tried making a chart for her that she gets a sticker every time she will wake up dry, but it is not working. At this point I think it is something that she cant help herself because I see that she really wants that sticker and she really doesnt want to wake up wet. I think it is just a nature which at this point she cant really help it. I hope she will grow out of it. At this age I think it is not ther right thing to put pressure on them, they are still too young.
Good luck

Thanks for responding. The thing is, I have NOT been waking him up in the middle of the night, because he is just in too deep sleep to want to get out of bed, let alone go make. Your daughter doesn't mind being woken up? And she is able to make while half-asleep?

She is half way asleep when I take her. I pick her up and just sit her down on the toilet seat, and she has no problem making like that. sometimes she doesn't even open her eyes.

We also wake up our 4 year old DD to go make or else she will wet her bed. Someone told us we shouldn't do that as she won't learn to control her urinating at night. What should we do?

I am very much for training the same time I train by day. The longer you wait the harder it is. I never do pull ups and limit the drinking before bedtime-like two hours if possible. Dd has a tiny bladder and would wake up wet. I take her every night at like midnight and have her sit until she pees-even five minutes. In the morning she will wake up dry. If I don't take her then she might end up waking up wet. I carry her to the bathroom-not make her walk there.

This might sound stupid, but I wonder if it makes a difference between boys and girls. All the answers so far, have been about girls.

I would take a boy too. I would make him stand by the toilet and support him from the back so he doesn't fall.

my three and a half year old son wears a diaper at night. he was toilet trained very easily in one week's time when he was 2 and a half. he is a bright boy bli ayin hora, but I dont think he is ready to "hold it in" all night at this point. I dont want to restrict drinking before bedtime, I think its better to go to sleep well hydrated (in fact, he gets a night-night drink right before he goes to sleep) and I dont want to disturb his sleep by waking him to pee. so, I am not even thinking about the nightime training yet.

you let them sleep pee - so long as it's by the toilet ... that is the only way for them to get used to the idea that they must sense when they have to pee - even if it's in the middle of their sleep ...

I still take my five yr old ds. He wears a pull up at night. We take him before he goes to sleep and then three hrs. later. He may still wake up with a wet pull up.
