I feel like almost every time I bring my child in to Dr it’s a virus and there’s nothing to do about it and then I’m annoyed that I shlepped in for no reason .
What would be signs for me to know when something is more bacterial and can be treated ?

Imo it has to do with the symptoms and length of time.

I don’t run into doc for every small thing
I go in if symptoms are bad and it’s long and not going away
But still almost always they say it’s viral and then tell me what to do for symptoms which I already know what to do !

So I take to the doctor when I suspect it's strep or might be an ear infection both of which get antibiotics.
If I don't think it's any of those two, I'll take to the doctor if I'm worried about breathing and I want him to listen, or if the child is sick for 3 days with no improvement at all, or If the child is lethargic, super high fever, weird symptoms that I want another opinion about whether it's extra serious and requires more intervention like hospitalization, fluids etc.

What the others said, plus age of the child. I'd take a 4 month old quicker than a 2 year old
My 5 year old randomly became hoarse. My brain went to strept but he wasn't complaining. By day 3 he said that his throat hurt and that is when we went for a culture.
Fever would be the biggest indication for me. Plus if child that is prone to ear infection is pulling at his ears etc.

My 5 year old has strep I only realized bcz both him and my baby had fever and my baby was complaining her mouth was hurting. My 5 yr old was avoiding telling me his mouth was hurting but I guess u can say it's intuition? Just bcz of fever I took him in and it wasn't just a virus

How about asking the doctor at the end of the visit, "do I need to come in for these symptoms next time?" Or, "How long should I wait for this to resolve before making an appointment in the future?"
