I'm toilet training my ds. he is doing great with '#1' but he's totally held himself back from making properly and now he's constipated. he asks to go to the toilet but then tells me 'it hurts soo much'.
what can I do to help him?

give him something to soften the stool so it just slips out. by the way it might now be a constipation issue but it also might be an issue that he is scared to do it on the toilet.

tomatoes is the first thing that jumps to mind also (I think) grape juice or camomile tea. and make sure he gets plenty of fluids.
stay away from rice and bananas that can be constipating.

Prune juice, if your child will drink it. Lots of dried fruit can also do the trick. We use miralax for one of our children who is prone to constipation.

Orange Juice is very helpful.

Also CELERY CELERY CELERY. Give him a stalk of celery to munch on as it's a natural laxative and high in nutriets that relieve constipation. Dip it in peanut butter and he'll love it!

I've been having a similar problem and was suggested to give mineral oil. "The recommended regime is to begin with 2 tsp of mineral oil twice a day for a toddler weighing 20 to 30 lbs. Increase the dose by 1 tsp every other day until the stool is soft. Be sure they drink lots of water and get plenty of fiber."

they work wonders!

my child has never been traumatized by me using them. I do explain after to them that we had to use it because of them holding it in or too much candy (after purim I find it happens every year). I sometimes put my son on the toilet and tell him to try just cause if he doesnt go for a few days then he gets constipated. You just need to be aware in the future and try and avoid going more than 1-2 days without a BM

prune juice! But for some kids they can take a lot longer to do #2 on the toilet. How about have him do his business in a diaper while sitting on the toilet so he gets used to that sensation?
