What is chassidish life like?

We are not chaseedish, but my dh and I learned that you taste shabbos food so that it gives you a small "taste of shabbos"....to help you anticipate the meal more.

We also once stayed by a chaseedish fam for shabbos, and they served us chicken and 2 types of kugels...delish Very Happy

That's what I feed the hungry members of my family - kugel, before Shabbos! to think that we were being mekayem a minhag too. LOL

I would think that frozen pizza would do the same thing...or cereal and milk . . . .

no milk when the kitchen is being used for fleishig. I'm talking about closer to shabbos.

I don't buy that, TR......a kid can take a placemat or eat on plastic. no one "has" to eat the shabbos food before shabbos!

My father loves to taste the hot food before shabbos. He gives a loud, "lekavod shabbos kodesh" and enjoys a preview of what's to come. And he's a "kalta litvak" !

Right on both accounts. nothing beats a really good fresh hot potato kugel out of the oven! Mine are also always different though. Some weeks it is as good as can be sometimes not. MB, what's the secret? Also, how do you keep from eating all the kugel? Do you make 2 one for Erev Shabbos and one for Shabbos?

BTW, I read an article on Rov Kanievsky and it mentioned that he always tastes all the food before Shabbos. It doesn't seem to be only a Chassidishe thing.

My kugel is a full 9x13 pan. We use up about 1/3 - 1/2 of it before Shabbos.

Dont be so literal. No prob. not ALL, just tasted all the 'main' dishes. You're not supposed to/allowed to wash Friday afternoon.

we are Lubavitch, but my husband comes from a Litvish background when growing up...and we always taste some of the food Friday afternoons. l'kavod Shabbos, and because we read/heard from several sources it is an appropriate and special minhag.

it really adds to the atmosphere...I'm already smiling in anticipation of tomorrow!

Of course we eat Shabbos food: soup, chicken, kugels, salads, Frday afternoon. What else do you eat on these long Fridays? What else are the kids supposed to eat at suppertime?

It's a strong minhag, nevertheless. The Lub. Rebbe told us that just like you taste the food on Friday afternoon in anticipation of Shabbos, so too we should live like Moshiach has already come. (Shabbos is compared to Moshiach.)

Sure. The Skulener Rebbe in post-war Romania landed in jail at least once for upholding Yiddishkeit. There are others, but none that come to mind immediately.

Can I ask another question?
In the Jewish press machberes column, when chassidishe engagements are announced, it gives the chossen's name but not the kallah. It only tells who her father and grandfathers are. Is there a reason for this?
