We are not chaseedish, but my dh and I learned that you taste shabbos food so that it gives you a small "taste of shabbos"....to help you anticipate the meal more.
We also once stayed by a chaseedish fam for shabbos, and they served us chicken and 2 types of kugels...delish

I would think that frozen pizza would do the same thing...or cereal and milk . . . .

Yep, I am 'quoting' Chocolate's term to make it easier to differentiate.

I don't buy that, TR......a kid can take a placemat or eat on plastic. no one "has" to eat the shabbos food before shabbos!

My father loves to taste the hot food before shabbos. He gives a loud, "lekavod shabbos kodesh" and enjoys a preview of what's to come. And he's a "kalta litvak" !

Right on both accounts. nothing beats a really good fresh hot potato kugel out of the oven! Mine are also always different though. Some weeks it is as good as can be sometimes not. MB, what's the secret? Also, how do you keep from eating all the kugel? Do you make 2 one for Erev Shabbos and one for Shabbos?
BTW, I read an article on Rov Kanievsky and it mentioned that he always tastes all the food before Shabbos. It doesn't seem to be only a Chassidishe thing.
Thanks Arita for starting this topic. Its been my favorite topic on Imamother yet!

My pleasure! I am also enjoying it immensely. I was contemplating starting a thread "What's it like to be yeshivish/litvish"too, b/c I like both!

Dont be so literal. No prob. not ALL, just tasted all the 'main' dishes. You're not supposed to/allowed to wash Friday afternoon.

we are Lubavitch, but my husband comes from a Litvish background when growing up...and we always taste some of the food Friday afternoons. l'kavod Shabbos, and because we read/heard from several sources it is an appropriate and special minhag.
it really adds to the atmosphere...I'm already smiling in anticipation of tomorrow!

Of course we eat Shabbos food: soup, chicken, kugels, salads, Frday afternoon. What else do you eat on these long Fridays? What else are the kids supposed to eat at suppertime?
It's a strong minhag, nevertheless. The Lub. Rebbe told us that just like you taste the food on Friday afternoon in anticipation of Shabbos, so too we should live like Moshiach has already come. (Shabbos is compared to Moshiach.)

Were there other Rebbeim who were persecuted like the Chabad Rebbeim for keeping Yiddishkeit alive?
|
Sure. The Skulener Rebbe in post-war Romania landed in jail at least once for upholding Yiddishkeit. There are others, but none that come to mind immediately.

GR wrote: | I didn't think that shirayim was a set time when the Rebbe gave these things out. I thought it just kind of happened.
I don't mean to set you against each other, but may I ask your (Chasidim with a Rebbe) opinion of the Chasidim without a Rebbe, that these types of things don't exist for?
Quote: | Of course! We have chof-alef kislev, which is the Satmar Rebbe zya"'s hatzalah from Auschwitz, it's an international Yom Tov. and then we have Chof Vov Av, the Rebbe zya'"s yahrzeit, an international Yahrzeit. Of course we have our own 'dates' .
|
Do you only celebrate from the current Rebbe or from the previous ones too? |
There were no Satmar rebbes previous to R' Yoel.

GR wrote: | Do other Chasidim have Chasidishe Yomim Tovim like we do?
Have the other Rebbeim- the ones that were in Russia- been to jail and such for mesiras nefesh in spreading Yiddishkeit?
Do you celebrate birthdays and Yahrtzeits of your Rebbeim and Rebbetzins? |
In Ger we celebrate the Yahrtzeits of the previous Rebbes, but no Rebbetzins and no Chasidishe Yomim Tovim.
Quote: | Also, is there such a concept of receiving things from the Rebbe as a bracha like wine from the Rebbe's becher, honeycake on Erev Yom Kippur, Matzah on Erev Pesach, etc? |
We get wine and apples on occasion besides for regular shirayim from a tish. But this is not done at a specified time, and his handed out as the Rebbe wills

Can I ask another question?
In the Jewish press machberes column, when chassidishe engagements are announced, it gives the chossen's name but not the kallah. It only tells who her father and grandfathers are. Is there a reason for this?
