I'm afraid to ask why the teachers aren't getting paid due to politics! that seems a bit extreme. Also, I'd imagine that many of the teachers are relying on a paycheck from their jobs as the primary income in their families. Wow!

I'm sure it's a difficult situation for all students and parents.

Are there enough stay at home mothers who could arrange learning groups--say getting a few girls together and learning parsha, chumash and review math, and science, etc.... Keep a structured setup and get your kids out of the house for at least an hour a day socializing...

Yeah, politics... who the schools belongs to, or something like that.

I heard that some ladies are making Bais Faiga Clubs, sort of like fun school, to make some $.

Bais Faiga is the cheapest tuition in Lakewood and with each child it is less and less. Also Rabbaims kids go for free all their girls and boys and the morahs kids gets one free tuition and the rest for a real reduced rate. That is a lot of free tuition besides all the chesed cases that they have that don't pay. Most girls schools in Lakewood are $4,000 a year plus $1,000 a year on a building fund that is a must so that is $2,000 more than Bais Faiga, it is a big difference.

It is a very sad situation and the administrator should be kicked out but the rosh hayeshivas have been trying for years to and they can't because he and only he has access to all of Bais Faiga and the Cheders money so if he leaves they are starting at zero. He is the only one with access to the bank accounts and who knows what he did with the money.

Bais Faiga has a chineese auction every year that brings in $75,000 plus a wedding hall that is rented every night. Where is that money? Also they are the only school in Lakewood that charges registration fees to every parent that applies at $250 a year, where is that money. They have at least 400 applicants. The problem is that if they kick him out he keeps the money. That's why he is saying there is no money because in case he has to leave then this way he can keep the money hidden whereever it is and leave with all the money too.

unless they are paying their teachers almost nothing it seems they are getting very little from tuition.

Atlastamom you can have my first grader if you want. Some teachers can have five to seven kids in the school free tuition does add up. Also teachers get bonuses Chanuka and Peasach. It's not much but it definitely pays better than being a secretary which is what the rest of Lakewood is.

I am paying $6100 this year for pre1a. Tuition will be $1000 more next year (unless it goes up) for first grade. NOt only that, but I have requirements for yeshivah cash & the school dinner and stuff. This is for ONE child, mind you. I'm considering homeschooling them. they won't learn anything, but who has this kind of money?

Umm that is very, very, very cheap. I pay $3500 for my DS and that is considered cheap in my area. Normal tuition here (for elementary) runs at about $7-$8k (I think).

Out of curiosity, I checked the website of the high school I went to (Modern Litvish girls school) and they now charge $16,000 a year for tuition. shock

Wow, I think I'm getting jealous here. Here are tuition schedules for 2 of the 3 schools we're considering for our kids for next year. Not only will be paying close to $9,000 PER CHILD, but notice the fees for middle school!

Wow - I just checked the website of an MO HS here also (well, about a half hour away, anyway). Their HS tuition? Less than middle school for the one just above ($10,700 for HS)!

At one point in time when many of my children were in school at the same time we paid over $75,000 tuition in one year. That was many years ago. At today's rates it would be much, much more.

Wow! $10,000 is what it will cost us if we want my son in school full-time next year (he'll be TWO!)

Did your school end up giving a lot of reduced tuition? I would guess that probably at least half of the frum community doesn't even earn this much per year.

well that's just peachy keen. I don't make that much in a year. so I guess what I'll do is send one kid to school every 3 years. the rest will just have to pick up common sense on their own.

Rolling Laughter Rolling Laughter Or just send the oldest and make her teach the rest of the kids. Hmmm..."Well, gee, honey, you already learned it last year. Put your knowledge to good use and teach your younger siblings!" Wink

hey, I'm going to do that! except that my youngest is a boy. I guess I'llkeep the girls home & teach them how to cook. we'll have household studies:

shopping & checkbook math
hey! what's growing in my fridge? science
proper english & etiquette for phone calls & ladies auxiliary speeches

I'm sure I can work a curriculum out there. and my 9th grade brother can teach my son. how's that for a plan?

Create a basic daily schedule for your kids so they know what to expect from the day. It will keep them and you from feeling like you're all flying by the seat of your pants. It doesn't have to be specifically broken up into short term blocks, but it's helpful to have a flow for the day. It's not pleasant to feel like your day is hefker.

Here's our basic schedule as homeschoolers, and I think you could easily adapt it to your short term needs:
wake up, daven, clean room
eat breakfast
chores
academic work for school aged kids

lunch
free time, assuming academic work is finished - that can be whatever they want it to be - time with friends, extra reading, activities, projects, games, playing with siblings
quick clean up
dinner
family read aloud
bedtime

I think it can be a wonderful opportunity to spend with your kids, if used as such. They can help you do what needs doing during the day - shopping, cooking, laundry - there's no rule that says you have to organize day camp activities for them all day, every day. If you approach it from a place of wanting to spend time with them while doing what you need to do, they'll enjoy the time with you, you'll be teaching them something, and it can be productive for everyone.
