When I made it I used fresh that had been thoroughly washed and then put some sugar on in a container to make a syrup with it worked fine.

I just tried making this. The crunch, once it was mixed together, had the look and texture of regular dough. It became better once I baked it, but it definitely doesn't have the texture of crushed cookies. I'm going to use it anyway.

Maya, did you melt the marg? The original recipe, the way I posted it called for way less crunch ingredients and the marg melted. Someone modified it and left that out.
