I don’t think there was any conscious thought process that went into Shulem’s cigarette. It was the classic self soothe reflex of my toddler reaching for his blankie and popping his thumb in his mouth when he’s upset. If you saw his expression looking at Nechama at the bus stop and knowing he’s going home alone you’ll agree.
I agree. I think he was both upset and very happy at the same time. He was upset and felt wistful that this wonderful woman was not within his reach. He was also very satisfied to have gotten to spend time with her, (legitimately) especially in such an important sensitive time for him.
From one of the trailers I saw that Nuchem and Shulem exchange some angry words, where Nuchem says that Shulem may be his older brother but he is a very small man, and that he can't find it in himself to be happy for him.
This makes me think that Shulem is going to try to pursue Nechama somehow. And this will tick off Nuchem.
But it's clear that the feelings are not mutual. Nechama went to the appointment with Shulem because she is kind to him, but she makes it very clear that there are no romantic feelings there at all. That's why she refuses his "taxi spayshel".

He didnt ask Tzvi Arye to leave kollel because TA was waxing on about how lucky he is to be of those people who are sitting and learning , so it made him feel guilty. Also, TA goes on his nerves.
Regarding the taxi driver listening to the show, you can hear that the music in the car is the same music as in the studio. Then he tells the driver to lower the volume when he talks to Nechama.
Later, when he wants to say tehillim and she tells him to say it and she will repeat, he makes a reference to her radio program, that others repeat after her.

That's not how I understood this.
Firstly, she could have been in one of those contraceptive pills where you dont get your period for a few months. Maybe he thought she was still taking that.
I think Ruchami pretending to be nidda and go to mikva is very devious and probably halachically problematic. Even Ruchami wouldn't stoop to do that. (I think)
Also, him saying that she turned her back on him, I understood that to mean that he realized she had been fooling him. He was saying it figuratively. Nothing to do with intimacy. Just that she had deceived him all these months by remiving the IUD, getting pregnant and not telling him she was pregnant.
As an aside, when Chanina tells Ruchami that those pillows look good on her and he wants her to wear them always, "even I dont have to know that they aren't real" I thought that was a big stretch. I understand it was a plot device that they needed in order to pull off the ruse, but it doesnt make sense for a husband to expect his wife to wear those pillows at home when they both know it's fake. That really made no sense to me.

Makes sense what you're saying. Although, some women don't really have a belly until the fifth month and then suddenly pop.

If I recall correctly, I read in Ahron Margalit's book "As long as I live" that he did the same thing. He was facing (what he thought was) a death sentence, and he left many recordings for his kid's to be heard on special occasions.
