I don’t think there was any conscious thought process that went into Shulem’s cigarette. It was the classic self soothe reflex of my toddler reaching for his blankie and popping his thumb in his mouth when he’s upset. If you saw his expression looking at Nechama at the bus stop and knowing he’s going home alone you’ll agree.
I agree. I think he was both upset and very happy at the same time. He was upset and felt wistful that this wonderful woman was not within his reach. He was also very satisfied to have gotten to spend time with her, (legitimately) especially in such an important sensitive time for him.
From one of the trailers I saw that Nuchem and Shulem exchange some angry words, where Nuchem says that Shulem may be his older brother but he is a very small man, and that he can't find it in himself to be happy for him.
This makes me think that Shulem is going to try to pursue Nechama somehow. And this will tick off Nuchem.
But it's clear that the feelings are not mutual. Nechama went to the appointment with Shulem because she is kind to him, but she makes it very clear that there are no romantic feelings there at all. That's why she refuses his "taxi spayshel".
Did anyone else pick up on the fact that the reason he thought of Nechama while in the taxi was because the taxi driver had the radio tuned into Nechama's show?

Totally missed that!
I thought it was quite strange he didn't ask Tzvi Aryeh to leave Kollel, or call Nuchem or Lipa. But what you say is very interesting!

He didnt ask Tzvi Arye to leave kollel because TA was waxing on about how lucky he is to be of those people who are sitting and learning , so it made him feel guilty. Also, TA goes on his nerves.
Regarding the taxi driver listening to the show, you can hear that the music in the car is the same music as in the studio. Then he tells the driver to lower the volume when he talks to Nechama.
Later, when he wants to say tehillim and she tells him to say it and she will repeat, he makes a reference to her radio program, that others repeat after her.
I missed it too. Thank you Babypink. I find it's always worthwhile to pay close attention to your comments!
Thank you! I love to analyze things and it's so much fun to do so when there are like minded people to do it with! And everyone notices different things and interprets things differently.
Also, Shtisel is so filled with symbolism and hidden connections that it's like a game to discover all the nuances.

מי שביים את התכנית או שהוא לא בירר או אני לא יודע. אין מצב שיעבור חודש , אולי מקסימום חודשיים והבעל לא יודע שאשתו בהיריון.
But of course that's not true. She could have pretended to be niddah & gone to mikvah.
(Oh I see now ppl posted that certain IUDS prevent any menstruation. Then they debate whether she can get pregnant right away etc.)

No, wasnt it that she told hanina that the surrogacy was continuing and that she was going to wear those pretend pregnancy belly things, so he thought that that was what was happening.

Yes, but in a normal marriage you would have thought he would have touched her during the next several months. And here he obviously hadn't, since he didn't realize the belly was real.
So it could have been that she pretended she was nidda. Although Hanina says something about her turning her back to him over the past few months, and we understand from that that she was probably refusing intimacy.

That's not how I understood this.
Firstly, she could have been in one of those contraceptive pills where you dont get your period for a few months. Maybe he thought she was still taking that.
I think Ruchami pretending to be nidda and go to mikva is very devious and probably halachically problematic. Even Ruchami wouldn't stoop to do that. (I think)
Also, him saying that she turned her back on him, I understood that to mean that he realized she had been fooling him. He was saying it figuratively. Nothing to do with intimacy. Just that she had deceived him all these months by remiving the IUD, getting pregnant and not telling him she was pregnant.
As an aside, when Chanina tells Ruchami that those pillows look good on her and he wants her to wear them always, "even I dont have to know that they aren't real" I thought that was a big stretch. I understand it was a plot device that they needed in order to pull off the ruse, but it doesnt make sense for a husband to expect his wife to wear those pillows at home when they both know it's fake. That really made no sense to me.

I understood it as meaning she had been deceiving him by keeping the pregnancy a secret.

Yes, but I think it had a double meaning. That she also turned her back on intimacy.
Otherwise, how would a husband not know his wife was pregnant? Sure she walked around with the pillows, but surely at night he could feel her belly? He's not an idiot.

Makes sense what you're saying. Although, some women don't really have a belly until the fifth month and then suddenly pop.
Anyone else have deja vu when Akiva and Rachelli were cutting vegetables in the kitchen? There's something very romantic about that scene, especially with Akiva giving Rachelli these looks. It was exactly the same as when he ended up in Elisheva's apartment one morning and they were preparing breakfast together.
One in a thousand - I think we say it in Yom Kippur davening, that a person can get a positive judgement
This is from Yerushalmi Kiddushin, I did not find it in Bavli, so Chaninah must be a very serious talmid chochom (it's not so common to learn Yerushalmi). It quotes two pesukim in Iyov:
אפי' תשע מאות ותשעים ותשעה מלאכים מלמדין עליו חובה ומלאך אחד מלמד עליו זכות הקב"ה מכריעו לכף זכות ומה טעם (איוב ל״ג:כ״ג-כ״ד) אם יש עליו מלאך מליץ אחד מני אלף להגיד לאדם ישרו ויחוננו ויאמר פדעהו מרדת שחת מצאתי כופר
Basically says if 999 malachim are saying bad and only one says good, Hashem will redeem you. This means from aveiros but Chaninah took it to mean that a one in a thousand chance is worth trying for.
Actually, my husband just told me that this is a gemara in Shabbos (Bavli). There may be several sources...
So clearly she does not expect to survive the birth. She is determined to give this child life whatever the cost. As she said, otherwise it's not worth living.
I wish Chanina could talk her out of this idea. Why didn't he and the Rov convince her that surrogacy is the right thing?
Well of course it's only a story and I hope nobody else goes through this!
Wow. Thanks for posting that.
If I recall correctly, I read in Ahron Margalit's book "As long as I live" that he did the same thing. He was facing (what he thought was) a death sentence, and he left many recordings for his kid's to be heard on special occasions.
