I don't "do" cholent. I didn't grow up with it, and I've decided it's an acquired taste.
That said, I just got a crockpot, and since I'm working this morning, I threw in some potatoes, chicken legs & thighs, and sweet potatoes before I left this morning. And then, since I remembered Pesach is around the corner, I threw in some barley to try to make a dent in the amount of grains we have in the house. So that's kind of cholent-y, isn't it?
Tomorrow we're out to lunch (pun intended), and I understand there's shepherd's pie & meatloaf. Yum.

We aren't cholent fans. DH doesn't like it and my parents retired it while I was living at home b/c no one ate it b/c they didn't want to be fleishig so my mother switched to soup and salmon for shabbos! Meatball stew is pretty cholenty though. It's fun to experiment with different things in the crock pot and we all prefer it that way.
Sigh. back to cooking now its nine people for shabbos (and thursday morning it was five) so thats eleven of us and I am exhausted. I think I need to add something to my menu.

How do you make "speedy" coq au vin? My husband loves it, but I don't make it too often because my recipe takes forever; it's good but very time consuming. I'd love to have a faster version. |
from quick and kosher cookbook
1 chicken (about 3 1/2 lb, cut into 8 pieces)
8 small white onions, peeled
16 small white mushrooms, cleaned
3/4 c. dry red wine
1 T. fresh minced parsley
2 t. crumbled dry thyme (or 4 t. fresh minced thyme)
1/2 t. black pepper
2/3 c. margarine, melted
2 dried bay leaves
Preheat oven to 375. Spray a 9x13 pan with non-stick cooking spray. Place chicken in pan, arrange onions and mushrooms around chicken. Pour wine over chicken and vegetables. Sprinkle with parsley, thyme and pepper. Drizzle melted margarine over chicken. Tuck bay leaves into wine mixture at each side of chicken. Bake, uncovered, for an hour and 15 min. Serve immediately. |
Sounds yummy! Thank you

Shabbos lunch:
Ciabbatta bread (found it in the kosher bakery here) with cold cuts, lettuce and tomatoe
bowtie, broccolli and corn salad (all mixed up with evoo and spices)
no dessert
Just us, so it's kind of small...

Yet another freezer shabbos (and heaven help anyone complaining until Pesach).
sweet challah
salads (humus, techina, edamame, quinoa, eggplant, pickles, humus balls, green salad)
veg and lentil soup
sliced leftover fleishigs (I'm not sure what it is, but it is in a red plastic container so that's what they are getting)
chinese rice (that's plain rice stir fried without oil in teflon with spices and with tamari wheat free sauce)
lukshen kugel
Anything anyone wants to pull out of shabbos' chulent - it's totally cooked before shabbos anyhow, usually people "steal" some of the kishke friday night)
cake - whatever I pulled out of the freezer.
Shabbos lunch:
sweet challah
salads left over from friday night
unidentified chicken from the freezer (maybe until tomorrow it will identify itself)
cholent
cake
To assuage my conscience I made a blueberry muffin cake. Only I don't have blueberries, just a can of blueberry cheesecake topping (the gefen kind, you know what I mean) that someone gave us for MM. So I make this muffin bottom and spoon on the top stuff and put in to bake and now I look at it after half an hour, the blueberry stuff has disappeared into the cake and is wet and moving and the sides are already crispy and browning like muffins so I closed the door and put it in for another half hour and whatever happens happens ..
And G-d help anyone who complains, it's between purim and pesach and as you get nearer to Pesach in this house you will get lots of interesting unidentified freezer stuff of baked combinations of whatever I have to get rid of.
THANK G-D FOR DH. He never complains about anything. He tells me I am gorgeous when I am ugly and harrassed and he tells me the food is delicious when it is almost burnt (he always finds a good side, tells me that the activated charcoal in the burned stuff will absorb gas from the rest of my cooking! See what a Zaddik he is).

Challah from freezer- home made by a neighbor who has a bakery in her home.
Lox something. I'm thinking of making a spread out of it. I have some lox in the freezer.
Beet salad. Still debating what kind and if it should be raw or cooked.
Eggplant salad. Still debating what kind, probably babaganoush.
Carrot salad.
Tomato dip, perhaps.
Vegetable soup. I'm debating if I should put some chicken in it or not.
Yerushalmi kugel from freezer. (Bought.)
Beef tomato stew, served over mashed potatoes.
Zuchini and pumpkin, somehow.
Have you noticed a lot of my menu is still up in the air? at least I went shopping already!
