My russian friend said as far as she knows, almost all russians potty train their kids REALLY young, like as early as a year.

If you're russian, what age did u potty train your kids?

I am. I trained my son at about 2 , well, I should say I started training him at 2, now almost 6 months later we still have accidents pretty often Confused

My mother thought it was quite late, but we've been in this country (US) for many years so she realized 2 is just about average to start.

I think something to keep in mind is that the maternity leave in Russia was 1-3 years and average family had 2 kids at most so things were quite different. They would start to put kids on the potty as soon as they were able to sit up. They would just put them every hour or so until the kid "chopped" and eventually asked to be put on the potty when they had to make. Also, there were no disposible diapers back then so people had much more of an incentive to train their kids. Tongue Out

nyet to the russian part. but I know in china many ppl start at a year, and russia and china are very close, geographically.

I am. We toilettrained our first one by 2 1/2. My mother was getting nervous since she thought I should have started waaaaay before that. By now with my second one who is over 2 years of age and we did not even start yet with toilet training, she is quite comfortable and is the one who is calming me down

What does being close geographically have to do with when people toilet train their kids??

because people who live in geographic proximity often have similar "minhagim." Very Happy

these are based on climate, demographics, food sources, yada yada.

I know that in Germany many children were trained at one year. Same story as what was mentioned here. No disposables (before the war) and kids were put on the potty until they got the idea and asked for it.

my parents started potty trapining me by 6 months.. by a yr I had no accidents

my kids arent being potty trained till at least 2-2 1/2

No kids yet, but yeah, my mom told me all about the lack of disposable diapers... or washing machines... when you have to wash, dry, and iron everything yourself... not sure why about the ironing part... super Soviet women LOL

My 2.5 year old dd is not trained yet. embarrassed

I trained the older two together, dd was just about 2, and ds was almost 3. Of course, all my older relatives were (and still are) going crazy over it.

There was an article in NYT a few years back about infant toilet-training. Read up if you feel like trying!

Europeens train by a year too. My mother used to sit in a high chair with a hole in it and potty seat underneath by 12 months.

I am not Russina but married into a Russian family. I train my kids late, closer to their 3rd birthday, B"H
my kids get trained within a week, with no accidents, if one shows intrest before I amy start earlier, but I would rather wait till I see they are ready. My MIL didn't like this and with my firstborn, she constantly asked me why I wasn't trainig, the baby was about 18/20 months at the time. Now she constantly tells me how good it is that I wait with my kids, one of her neices started training their baby as an infant, the baby is now 3 years old and has many accidents daily.

alas I can confirm 100% this is not the case. EVERYONE used to train much earlier then they do now. with disposable nappies things have changed.

In Williamsburg ppl train their kids at a little over 2, average age 2 1/2. Chadorim & schools dont take non trained kids, and everyone sends their kids to school/cheder by the time theyre 3. anyone remember how I nearly lost my mind trainig my son? BH at 3 1/2 he goes to the bathroom by himself.
