Hi, I am looking for ideas for a nice bar mitzvah gift for a family member. They really went all out accommodating us for the simcha and I would like to give something that will be appreciated.
Does anyone have any good ideas? For those who made bar mitzvas, what were some of the most appreciated gifts?

Perhaps a nice menorah? My DH still uses one that he got for his Bar Mitzvah.

One friend of the family gave to each of my brothers a nice leather wallet with their initials on a gold plate. Years later they both still use it.
Another friend of the family gave each of the boys a shofar- I think the boys liked it.

Shofar
Etrog box (doesn't have to be silver, one son got a tooled leather one that he loves)
Yad (nice decoration, and can be used when reading the Torah, same son bought one with bar mitzva money)
without religious theme:
Heavy duty backpack (very useful to Israeli son. In the U.S. I bought monogrammed LL Bean duffels - they loved it)
Camera
Monogrammed towel set (2 boys got those - use them till this day)
Terry bathrobe as above

I was going to say "backpack" but Tamiri beat me to it. Anything that has to do with tiyulim is probably a great present. THey have these backpacks now with a bottle and a really long straw that you can drink from without removing the backpack. I never saw one but I heard about it.

We've gotten and given that camelback drink thing and it's a great gift but I thought it may be too inexpensive.

They're called camelpacks, if I'm not mistaken, CM.
My mother used to give science experiment sets, like chemistry sets. I'm not saying I like the idea, I'm just throwing it out there.

Thanks for the ideas, all! I'll look around and hopefully find something.

This wouldn't be appropriate for all families, but most 13-year-old boys I've known would appreciate pretty much anything from the army surplus stores -- a cool flashlight, jackknife, binoculars, etc. Or backpack, as Tamiri said.

The gift my boys liked best (though I wasn't as thrilled with it) was a gift card to Best Buy.

I have 3 bar mitzvas in the next week, so here is what I got:
for my bil- I got a challah cover with his name embroidered.
for my cousin and a very close family friend I got a cutting bored that says Shabbos Kodesh and it comes with a matching knife that you can pull out from the top...
the gifts came out cheaper then if I would've given a $36 check...

To me those seem like odd gifts for a bar mitzvah -- more appropriate for a wedding. While a bochur might use a becher (in our family everyone makes their own kiddush for example), what would he do with a challah cover or challah board & knife (other than put them away until he gets married)?

I would have to agree it seems more wedding like ... (even for the boys who use own lechem mishna)
my choice would be becher and/or sefarim name stamp

I give the shabbos light. it's a practical gift. I think it's great for every room. you can learn and read a book at night.....

That is a nice gift, but if a number of boys share a room it might not be practical to put a few of them in the one room.

I would suggest asking the parents of the bar mitzvah boy what he enjoys.
I did that for a very close friend's first son. I was traveling in for the simcha and didn't want to give anything Judaica because he'd get that aplenty. So I asked her and she told me he's really in to stamp collecting. So I got a stamp album and a couple of first day of issue stamp sets. He still remembers it a few years later.

Years ago I remember giving a troy oz. of silver. The ones who got it thought it was really cool. Also silver coins, for collecting is also something different.
