We like to give tzedekah boxes. They have some really cool ones that look like shuls around the world. It doubles as a tzedekah box and art which they can keep their whole lives

I usually give the Leatherman multi-tool. Its a knife, pliers, screwdriver, etc.. and folds up small. http://www.leatherman.com/mult......aspx

Another idea, for English speakers, is a Barnes & Noble or Borders gift card.

sorry I didn't get to reply sooner...
the challah cover that I got would've been very inappropiate for a wedding gift. it's big enough to fit exactly 2 small bilkelech (or rolls...). so that makes it a very special gift for a bar mitzvah boy.
in our family the bochur only makes kiddush at night, but has lechem mishnah both suedas. besides- a becher is way more expensive. same with the challah board.

One other idea which may not be so great in this economy, is to buy the bar mitzva boy a few shares in a company. He will enjoy (You would hope) seeing his stock rise in value.

Money is always appreciated because then he can buy whatever he wants or he can save it for when he's older. Another idea is a kiddush cup. I bought one for my nephew and he loved it. Aside from Judaic items or money I know someone who bought a cool motorized water shark to use in the water (this boy has a place to swim by his house). If he has a game system like a Wii, Xbox or Guitar Hero games for that system are a great idea also.

We like to give a silver Cross pen (they make a really expensive looking one for $20) and have the Bar Mitzvah boy's name etched onto it (additional $6).

We just gave a nice Haggadah to an American boy who made a Bar Mitzvah here in Israel.
