My family (me, dh, and 2 kids) were invited to my husband's friends house for shabbos. They live out of town and I've never met them. I don't even know the wife's name or how many kids they have! Anyway, is it appropriate to give a cookbook when we go? I can bring the usual candy platter/wine but I got a nice cookbook for chanukah from a student that I will never use. It's the new KBD... What do you think?

I'd be thrilled if someone gave me that for a gift!

Yup! A cookie/candy platter will get used up that Shabbos and cookbooks last. Plus, they might have bought stuff for after the meal etc... so it'll be even more appreciated. have a good time!

oh, greenie, they're strangers! op can't possibly know whether or not the hostess is a good cook. If she brought the Weight Watchers cookbook, that might be insulting, but KBD? Come on.

Cookbooks are nice gifts anytime. It doesn't necessarily show anything against the recipient. the best cooks can always make use of new ideas and recipes
