Yes, I do mean what you are thinking of. I said the chuppa is representative of that, which is why it's not appropriate inside a shul.

hm ... a weird reason to have it outside shock

Uh, I thought that was what the Yichud room was (representative) for. That once upon a time the marriage was consummated in the Yichud room but for whatever reason it fell out of practice.

There are shuls that have a way to open an opening somewhere. I know where I got married there was one. But it was very badly situated, we would have done the chuppa in a corner as opposed to in the middle!
So we did without. It didn't matter to us; if it was possible, why not. If inconvenient, well our parents, etc, did without.

You're all right!

It's done outside because of the promise to Avraham that his offspring should be like the stars of the sky. (Yes, this applies during daylight as well.)

The yichud room represents that other thing.

However, the chuppah still represents the groom's space where he first brings his bride, regardless of whether it's put up inside a building or out. It is for this reason that parents/shoshvinim should not actually stand under the chuppah, but rather slightly outside of it.

The minhag is from having the chuppa under the stars. Even if it's during day time, stars are still up there, just the sun overpowers them.
In many wedding halls they have a skylight right above where they make the chuppa. Or, like a hall I was in in Chicago, there is a door to an outside courtyard where the guests can sit indoors and the chuppa is actually outdoors.

Mrs. XYZ, the no chairs thing is possibly from the custom to remain standing for a chuppa. In front of 770, no chairs are usually placed, unless the chuppa is in the side courtyard or someone is too frail to stand.

The minhag in Lubavitch is to have the chuppah "under the stars" this can be outside or indoors with an 'opening' in the roof - as quoted from a letter of the Rebbe:
"...this is not a compromise, but rather fulfills the requirement [of having the chuppah under the heavens] in its totality."

Here is a quote from the "handbook" that was given out at my wedding:

"Many have the custom for the chuppah to be held beneath the open skies. This recalls G-d's blessing to Abraham that his decendants be as numerous as the stars. Furthermore, a chuppah held under the open heavens symbolizes the couple's resolve to establish a household which will be dominated by "heavenly" and spiritual ideals."

I think the point is to have the chuppa under the stars. The easiest way to do this is by having the chuppa outside. An alternative, is to have the chuppa inside, with the canopy being under an open skylight.
I didn't want any weather to interfere with our chuppa, so I chose to hold our chuppa inside (even though it was not raining).
