Try food coloring in the dough.
Sometimes I roll the dough into a log, freeze it a little wrapped in wax paper, and then I roll the log in sprinkles. Just slice off the cookies and bake as needed when you are ready.

I was just going thru some of my recipe stuff today and came across 2 more ideas for sugar cookies.
1. Use a very small round cookie cutter (like the size of a grape juice bottle lid) and cut out a lot of small cookies. When they are baked, wrap them in cellophane like a roll of coins and tie the ends with ribbons. This is great for Chanukah (gelt) or for Purim (mechatzis hashekel). This also works really well with shortbread. (3/4 cup margarine softened, creamed with 1/4 c. sugar. Add 2 cups flour, mix well. Roll, cut and bake at 350 for about 20 min or until done.)
2. Cut out cookies with larger round or flower shaped cutter. Take an old, empty spool (from thread). Clean and dry well and spray with non-stick cooking spray. Press down with the spool into the center of the cookie. This will leave a very pretty design in the center of the cookie, almost giving the look of a cookie press.

Does anyone have a really good recipe for sugar cookies? I've tried so many, and I was never really happy with them. I remember eating really good ones as a child, but I gave up trying, after so many unsuccessful tries.

I just found this recipe on allrecipes.com (a great site, BTW) and it got great reviews. I was also looking for a good recipe. I doubled it, and got about 170 Chanukah cookies. I also took the advice from the reviews on the site, and made the dough the night before, and refrigerated it overnight. Then, when I was rolling them out, I left the bowl in the fridge and took out a little of dough at a time. If you do it like this it doesnt get too sticky and it is easier to work with.

Here's the recipe:

1 1/2 cups margarine (softened)
2 cups sugar
4 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
5 cups flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt

Cream marg. and sugar
Add rest of ingredients
(refrigerate overnight)
roll out dough, and cut cookies
Sprinkle with sugar and bake until golden around the edges.

Enjoy!!
