How to clean Uggs

I just bought the short tan uggs and wanted to know how to protect them before I wear them in the snow. My friend told me that the snow/salt will ruin them. Is a general suede protector spray good enough?

I actually also have them from last year but its true that salt does some damage to it, I dont think there is anything to protect it from happening. I have 2 pairs the uggs I usually wear for cold days and for snow days I wear my other 1.
