I've always just tossed into a separate load and when the shirts got too stained buy new. But it adds up. I want to learn how to keep the shirts white.
I soaked a whole bunch of (used to be white turned) brown kids shirts in bleach for about a week and put in with my white load. It didn't do much (if anything).
What else can I try?
If I buy new, what can I do preemptively to keep them white?

Spray with maxi strength oxi clean. As early as possible. Wash load with detergent and oxi clean powder. Soak first if your washer has the option.

Never use bleach
Only oxi clean or similar type powder

Try a mixture of baking soda hydrogen peroxide and blue dawn dishwashing soap.
I haven’t tried yet but someone just told me this cleans stains off white shirts and wool tzitzis.
Soak for a few hours and the wash

We do a white load every week with white shirts, undershirts, socks, underwear, and the Shabbos tablecloth. It gets washed hot with bleach. Everything comes out white and stays white.
My 6 year old stains his white shirts really badly sometimes, so usually pretreat those and wash them with the regular laundry until they're basically clean and then throw them in the white load to stay white.
