This year, a certain relative emailed all my kids Amazon gift cards to their personal email accounts. They range from age 10 to 21. Two have Amazon accounts, but the rest definitely do not, nor do we want then to.
I remember getting Amazon gift cards that come with a number, and you can key it in at purchase instead of a credit card even without signing in. But these all require that you redeem them by dumping it into your account. It tells you that if you don't have an account, you can sign up.
This relative wants to know why the kids haven't used them yet. The kids don't want to dump the money into my account and have us need to keep track of what they have used when I order for them. They have been asking for their own accounts. We have said no, but now they are saying they have to since this is how they need to use gift cards. I am not thrilled. Is this a change?

When my kids get an Amazon gc, it goes into my account. Then we track when they spend it. I would not want my younger kids opening their own accounts.

If the computer are signed into your Amazon account, I think clicking on the link will put it into your account. Plus there is probably a code there

Have your kids decide what they want to get, then add the gift card to your Amazon account and order it.

Am I wrong that you used to be able to use these without an account? It was my kids' favorite thing about them- keying in their code to use the money themselves.
My relative used to send gift cards to my account. Now she specifically sends to the kids so they can use it on their own- she tells them this directly. I can't easily keep track of the balances of multiple different card. And I find that when they have just the card, they learn the value of it. They see exactly how much is left, and have to budget for tax, and can't buy when there's too little left. It's not me saying no- the card doesn't have enough.
