Text message is fine for most people.
If you have specific (older) relatives or friends that are the type to care and be offended, then send them a handwritten note.

You're never wrong sending a card, though young people seem to be ok with less. A text is better than nothing though personally I find it too flip for
a serious gift. $250 from your grandma rates a card AND a phone call. Actually, anything from Grandma, even a plastic rattle, rates both.

A serious gift will get a card like $100 or more.
A baby outfit is a much appreciated gift and a serious one too but if they don’t send me thank you cards why should I go through the effort and added expense (it adds up quickly!) ?
I can send a personal thank you via text like they did for me, no?

Personally I sent thank you cards, but I notice in my neighborhood no one does. They just send a thank you on the neighborhood chat to thank for the group gift.
