We went through this as well! The Graco slim fits that we had didn't work, so we bought Dionos for the other kids (both forward facing), and that worked. It was an investment, but far less than a new car!

Booster isn't helpful as it's harder to fit your hand in between.

Each car is different in terms of what seats will fit...

Was it a car or suv ?

Just wondering how I can test it out before buying? Do you think a baby store would allow to try

A car, Camry specifically
Maybe you can call a local store and see if they'd let you try the floor models?

A RideSafer vest worked for us, and offered a little more restraint than a booster for a wiggly four-year-old.

We were able to do a ff diono in the middle between a rear facing slim fit and an infant seat (ours was a graco). A booster is worse because you need to get your hand in to buckle. When baby outgrew the infant seat we put him in the slim fit and got a second diono.

Is the dionos much slimmer than the graco slim fit?
Which infant seat - wondering if a graco infant seat would be slimmer than a Doona and much more reasonable

I fit 2 Costco finale seats for the big kids and a Graco infant seat. After baby outgrew the infant seat, switched it for Graco contender 65 put in rear facing. This is in a Corolla which is smaller than camry

Yes. Much slimmer.
We had the basic cheapest graco infant seat.

I’ve done various combinations of 3 across. It really is about trial and error. There used to be some BBBs that would let you try, but I don’t know anymore. Maybe you can borrow from a friend to try. If you can find a local CPST, they may be able to help you as well.

Graco makes multiple car seats under the name slimfit. They are not all actually very slim. It’s very confusing. The one that has “3 LX” in the name is the one that is actually slim.
Also, a booster is not necessarily going to solve your problem because it’s very hard to buckle a booster sandwiched between 2 car seats.
