I live in NY, not NJ, so my response may not be helpful, but much will depend on how high you keep your thermostat.
My house is around 3000 square ft. I keep the thermostat at 68 during the day and 62 at night.
My gas bill last month, which includes gas for the stove, was $235.

House is 3500 sf and I got a bill for over $600. and I wasnt home for at least a week. For that week I left heat on 58, so pipes shuldnt bust.

The bill seems outrageous.

We recently bought the house, and the 2nd floor has the furnace in the attic, so we never changed the filter. Could that be a reason that the system is overworking?

Who can I call to see what the problem is?

Slightly off topic but how do you all calculate your square feet? Are you including all stories? Because 3500 square feet x 3 stories is massive.

Gas went up a lot this winter. I track our bills and last month was significantly higher than we ever paid. I’m hearing this from a lot of ppl.

The Redfin listings tell you house's footage. 3500 is total.

How's the insulation in the house? You can't exactly square footage of one house to another. Insulation, which direction yiur house faces to get sunlight affect how much heat you'll use. Is it old construction or new construction. We just did construction, put in spray foam for insulation and our 4000 Sq. House bill is $225.

3000 sq duplex (plus basement apt) in Lakewood $320. It's the most I ever paid in 8 yrs in winter.
I have heat on all 3 floors, use my gas dryer and ovens A LOT
$600 is VERY high.
Years ago I got a $500 bill for a tiny Coventry house when we were away for a week. Terrible insulation and drafty.
Definitely get it checked out.
I've used both of these (frum) guys and was very happy. Honest people.
