DH plans to be home around 7/730 so not much different than any other Friday night. They are starting to daven at 4:55 instead of 5:30 though so maybe he will be home earlier. There is leining though...

It's based on a few things
1) Mincha after shkia - because shabbos starts - and ends much latter

2) There's a minhag to wait, and not make kiddush between 6-7 pm

Combined, the men come home at about 7.

Btw, most don't follow this minhag in even minor extenuating circumstances, such as restless guests, minor medical needs, or if people are fasting.

I suggested to my husband to take some cookies to shul but he thinks he will be home before the fast is even out.

(our shul is pretty quick - they daven mincha and maariv straight away)

She is comparing this situation to Purim night. Megilla is leined right after taanis esther straight after maariv so no one broke their fast yet. And still they dont rush thru megilla.

We're Viznitz so I guess we are makpid to daven mincha before the shkiya, davening usually starts 10 minutes after the zman. We also hold that one can make kiddush between 6-7 if he says Av Harachamim first.

My father will never make kiddush between 6 and 7, even fasting, etc. He'll make sure to be home before 6.

DH does make kiddush between 6 and 7 but will definitely be home earlier, not because they'll daven faster but because usually there's a shiur after maariv which DH and DSs stay for, and I don't mind. I imagine that this week there won't be a shiur, or if there is, they will not stay for it.

Don’t you have to wait until you hear kiddush to eat?

I was wondering if everyone would want to jump straight into the meal or have coffee and muffins first.

It's a very silly comparison

Megillah has to be read after nightfall, marrive doesn't.

Also, there's a specific need to understand every word written in the megillah, which is why it's usually said at a slow pace

My husband's shul starts mincha an hour and 10 minutes after the zman every week. Most shuls in the area start 30-45 minutes after, but a few start like dh's. In the morning he's always home by 11:30 though so it evens out.

I am fasting and yes we are satmar. If I'm really hungry I'll make kiddish before dh comes home.
