NJ Family Care is requiring me to be off Private health insurance in
order to apply. I am wondering how safe you think it is to have no
insurance for a minimum of 2 months? Has anyone tried it? My husband doesn't think it's safe but I want to save the over $1,000 we can save after we get on.

In the same boat! My kids were denied because we have health insurance through an employer. I need to pay into the premium, and can’t afford it. I don’t think it’s normal at all. Kids need health insurance. They shouldn’t have to go 2-3 months without it. Makes no sense

We can also barely afford it. My son's schduled for surgery and we need to pay another 2 grand on top of premiums.
Plus you get a fine if you don't have insurance, so what doyou do then?

I am not familiar with the nuances of Jersey Care

However in general public policy is that people with insurance through their employer need to use that insurance rather than use taxpayer money for government insurance.

You can't get a subsidy through the marketplace if you have employer insurance which is affordable according to the IRS. That is 9.02% of income.

Otherwise it is essentially a freebie to corporations who don't provide insurance for workers and so the government is subsidizing the corporations by paying for medical care for their employees.

I dont know if you are eligible if you have the option for employee coverage

BUT, you wont be without insurance if you are approved

It can take up to a couple months to be approved, but the coverage starts from the first day of the month you applied. So for example, if you apply today 1/8, and got approved on 3/20, your coverage would be from 1/1. Any medical expenses from 1/1 can be billed to the insurance once you get your information in march

If you dont get approved, then it would be an issue obviously

That is not true!
First of all, u cant get approved if u have employee coverage.
Second, the hmo does not go into effect until the first of the month following the month that u are approved. Only the Medicaid part goes into effect right away and not all doctors take straight Medicaid

I joined United Refuah for the three months we were waiting for an answer from NJ family car (it’s not technically a health insurance and you can answer honestly that you don’t have insurance if you’re on it).

who said its affordable? its not affordable! I can get employee insurance for my kids, my work pays half, I would have to pay $1K a month, where am I supposed to get $1K a month for this?
If you qualify for family care,then why not take it? I pay taxes to, why should my tax dollars not have any benefit to me as well as others?

The issue is that the 9.02% is calculated based on an individual plan. The family plan could be anything and is often 30% or more. It's a known problem that's been around and no one's doing anything about it..

You can still be treated in any hospital and usually Medicaid is retroactive to when you applied!
But do call the LRRC!!

This has been changed.

If the family portion is more than 9.02%, the spouse and children are eligible for a premium subsidy based on income.

However the person who works would not be eligible for the subsidy if the premium for them alone was less than 9.02%

FWIW “affordable” is a legal term and not whether you think it is too expensive for your budget. 🤷‍♀️

I spoke to LRRC, was in this position too. They told me to take my kids off my insurance and then apply for jerseycare. If my kids would need medical care before the jerseycare application for approved, they said that I would be able to go to chemed and have jerseycare cover it as long as I’m income eligible.

It took over 6 months for Jerseycare to process my application. Absolutely insane!! My kids miraculously didn’t need any medical care during that time, I just pushed off their well visits because didn’t have patience to have to figure out how to get seen at chemed.

But now we have free insurance with no deductible and it is such a relief. It’s worth the headache - go for it.

I am paying for a fully private plan, not through an employer. I spoke to LRRC and got all the info. I just want to make sure it's a safe thing to be without insurance. (Which I know it's really not) Maybe will go on United refuah healthshare, that's a good comptomise.

It’s for kids of low income families. My kids get insurance through my job that we pay a fortune for. My husband got a pay cut, so now we’re eligible for Jersey care for the kids so that we can afford food with those $1000 a month we currently pay in premiums. Except I can’t get them off my work insurance to switch them over.

Did you see my post about chemed? You can go to a state approved hospital or clinic and have treatment while waiting for the application to be processed so I felt comfortable with it.

LRRC also told me that if you have an income lower than a certain amount, your kids can be on both while you apply. They don't automatically have to be off private insurance in order to apply. I finally got my denial letter, not sure I want to go through the whole process again, but it seems worth it. On Refuah Healthshare website it seems I need to pay the first 60 day of everything and Jersey Care took 60 days to process. Please help me decide which way to go!!
