We bought a house a year ago and our washing machine came with the house. We have been very tight and do not have extra to buy a new machine.
The machine constantly smells so bad, I keep doing empty bleach washes to try to clean the machine but I did one a week ago and it stinks again. Anyone have suggestions for how to clean the machine so it doesn’t smell? I feel like my clothing will smell too

I had to replace my rubber seal for $300. It got moldy over time and I couldn't get the smell out. I tried everything to clean it. The milder was "built in" the rubber.
My handyman said they get replace every 3 years because this issue of mold

So is the rubber seal usually the issue? I see mine is dirty and I tried cleaning under it with a rag but didn’t seem to help

Yes it's mold embedded in the rubber, keeps growing.

Clean the filter at the bottem of the machine (or atleast mine has such a nob)

Do a short cycle with Vinegar, should help

Do you leave your machine open between loads?

1. Hot bleach load every so often.
2. I use a washing machine cleaner- I prefer washer magic. Found tide and the other brands to be smelly and perfumed but once it aired out there was no benefit. Best to use regularly on new machine
3. Keep door open. All the time except if actively using the machine. Don't leave loads in ever.
4. When you clean the machine, especially with washer magic, dampen a cloth with the cleaner and rub on all sides of the seal, inside and under.

Eventually mold will come. But this delays it.
