LA is a wonderful place because of the schools here!! I actually have sent kids to Yayoe and Toras emes throughout the years and we found both yeshivas to be incredible. Toras emes definitely has a more yeshivish vibe then Yayoe. Yayoe is a big mix of parents and right wing modern orthodox would fit right in there.

Good to hear! Why have you chosen TE vs YAYOE and vice versa in the past? Does TE also have a mix?

And what high schools have you chosen?

TE has a big mix, but I wouldn't call a group there RwMO.
Spectrum of Very yeshivish to JPF with moms in leggings and calves showing, but those parents are not hashkafically RWMO.

I don't know why someone said schools in LA aren't good.

We liked both schools for different children of ours. It’s worthwhile for you to visit both schools and get a sense of which you would fit into better. But LA has fantastic chinuch overall!

If you really value secular education and no kollel, you're not gonna choose toras Emes, yeshiva gedola or calabasas. They are not renowned for their English departments (like most yeshivos). They place a high value on kollel.

But they are great yeshivish schools!

So Op, the question is what do you value most?

Not here to debate the MO approach to secular education but will point out that I have a family member who went to Yeshiva Gedola a number of years ago.
At the time they took their learning very seriously.
Secular education was not their highest priority while in high school, but it also wasn’t a complete joke.
More importantly, while there they developed the traits necessary to be successful when life required it. They learned to treat people right, be diligent, hard working, honest etc.
They had the skills to do what they needed to do as life progressed, even if their Yeshiva High School education wasn’t a college prep program.
He’s in his 30’s now and I actually spoke to him recently about where some of his classmates ended up. He didn’t know where all his former classmates are but of the ones he did know, some are still in Kollel, Some are Rabbi’s(Shul and/or School Rebbe), one is an MD, two are attorneys, one engineer, one cs Major and tech founder, five are in business (Real Estate/Healthcare/Service).

Thank you for the very helpful information! Good to know about YAYOE. Why did you choose it over Toras Emes? I heard YAYOE is very small, is that true?

And would you say any of the high schools have the values I mentioned (frum + great secular)? Do you know what MBY is like these days? I heard some very bad things about the rebbeim there in the past, I wonder if it has improved.

TE has terrible academics, especially in the secular subjects. This is a generalization but also my general feel for the school. The boys in general don't respect the secular teachers, I have a friends who taught there. Experienced teachers who taught in other schools as well who remarked how below grade level they were. TE also expects a certain box of a student. My family doesn't fit the square mold plus it means they would be in the "non chinuch class". A friend's kid was getting bullied but couldn't ask to switch because then they would be in the "bad class". Whatever that meant.
I went to BY and saw how low the level was of the TE girls in English subjects (I was one of the few who came from a different elementary. Totally bored in some subjects- TE expected to be spoonfed).

YAYOE is also very small. 1 boys and 1 girls class per grade. They are in the same building, different floors. Which means no possibility to switch classes but also that the teachers know your kid. PTA they know my kid, not just test scores. It's an issue being small in that one of my kids doesn't fit well with their class and can't do anything about it. But I honestly think that kid would be way worse off in a larger school and larger class size where they can't give the attention they need.

TE pushes kollel and chinuch. Sheitels only (other hair coverings are a rarity even if cover everything). No one does secular entertainment or definitely won't talk about it openly.

YAYOE is a mix. Yeshivish to RWMO. Less "boxy". While no secular entertainment is allowed, no media characters on backpacks etc, some parents allow certain things for their kids.

I think that your post is extremely negative toward TE, and I don't think they deserve it. There are many beautiful things about TE for the right type of family.

I think that you could have said you don't think it work for a family that values secular studies, as you have heard from parents and staff that the level of academics in TE is lower than that of YAYOE.

I am curious as to where you went to school for elementary before BYLA. Emek? Yavne?
Would you not send your girls to BYLA? Would you choose Machon?

Yes it is a negative about the school and I did say it is a generalization. She asked about academics. I was speaking of academics. TE doesn't have those. But they have a certain hashkafa that is right for many people. I have friends who send there and love the school.

But yeah the reading and math levels, especially for boys are terrible. But even girls- it doesn't compare to YAYOE and definitely not yavneh or the other "advertise as MO schools".
I won't say what elementary I went to as since I didn't go to TE but went to BYLA- it would out who I am. Not many stay in LA...

I'm not the PP. I went to Toras Emes and felt hugely disadvantaged in the beginning of high school compared with the girls from Emek or Yavneh when it came to the secular subjects. They obviously had a better education. However, their advantage only lasted a year. It equalized by the end of 9th grade as we all learned the same thing and my skills caught up.

Bais Yaakov is a HUGE mix and if the students are in the honors classes, they get a phenomenal education that is definitely college-prepatory. (Why can't the yeshivos do this?!?!?!)
But Kollel is definitely pushed.

Machon is new. I don't know much about it. But given how pro-kollel BY is, if I didn't want my girls to want kollel boys, I'd choose Machon. If I didn't care, I'd choose BYLA.

Third generation LAer here!
Love LA and our wonderful community.

The schools for you are Yavneh and then Yula or Machon. Possibly BYLA- I went there and the education is excellent.

If you can’t afford the city, yes houses are $2 million and up, maybe maybe you can find for $1.8 million but it would be small, consider North Hollywood/Valley Village. There houses are $1.2 million and up and you can send your kids to Emek and Valley Torah.

LA is expensive but worth it.

If you’re fine renting a duplex expect to pay $5k minimum for 3 bedroom.

Happy to answer any LA questions!
