Fair enough. Then if you feel strongly that you don't want your kids to know, I guess that's your answer. Until you decide they are able to understand

I appreciate your respect for my feelings .

Kindle app is free. You can install on your phone and check out books through library apps to amazon and they will upload to there. You can return the kindle and get a tablet and the kids won't know the diff.

I did not know the app is free. So basically I’ll sign in to my log in and my subscription will be available

Tablet is a great idea too. I happen to love the lighting of the kindle. It’s not like I’m looking at a screen in bed

.

You login to the app on as many devices as you want. Do it before returning so you can be sure you are in.

Got it. I may not be able to return the kindle- it’s from staples and I don’t have the box. I might gift it to someone

I'm not saying what I think you should do, but yes there are Jewish books available for a kindle. Not a ton but some. Ruthie Pearlman is one that comes to mind.

I don't read non Jewish fiction but I do read plenty of non fiction like psychology, parenting, science and I read them on the Libby app on my phone (use a library card to check out ebooks).

I'm just not sure if you want to outright tell your kids "oh it's only Jewish books" or you want them to assume it? I think what they assume would depend on what they know/have been exposed to.

I would not lie to my kids that it’s only Jewish… I try to be honest with my kids, especially if it’s something they’ll uncover eventually.

They would probably assume it’s Jewish books, but the point is that they’d understand the bigger picture at one point when they get older…

What’s a Libby app?

Yes probably re your second paragraph. But if you're not going to outright lie to them (totally agree!!) they will eventually know that about you regardless of how you read the books.

Libby is an app for borrowing ebooks through the public library system. You enter your card details and you can borrow as many books as that library allows you, from their ebook system. It's really great!!

To be clear, I don't know what your kids will assume but imo a Kindle isn't 100% giving away that you read non Jewish books but it does assume that you read at least some of them, like even just nonfiction.

Do u mean that even if I return the kindle and read these books hardcover they’ll eventually know? I wonder…

How does Libby differ from the kindle app? It’s all free? That’s sounds great!

Right that's exactly what I mean.

Libby differs from kindle like a library differs from a bookstore - you can only borrow what other people haven't checked out, though you can place holds (a certain number at a time) and you can borrow things only for a limited time and a limited number of books. They also have audiobooks. New releases or popular books often have a long wait time but there's always something available, and you can filter by what's currently available.

Ok I’m on the fence about that opinion. It’s like me watching movies in my room at night and I don’t think they need to know.

This Libby sounds so cool. Though how can they have a limited number of ebooks to check out of one book?

I hear that. So far my big ones are boys that read mostly Yiddish and they don’t realize my books are not Jewish. I also toss them once I’m done reading them

A kindle is very small and discreet. Your children sound like they are young enough that out of sight for a while will also be out of mind. If you don't mention it, and keep it in a drawer for a while, they'll probably forget all about it.

You need some kind of longer term plan. At the moment your older boys don't read English, and you think they don't realise your books aren't Jewish. This may or may not be true. They probably don't think about it much, but as they get older, they are likely to notice that the covers don't look so Jewish. If you have girls, who presumably will have better English reading skills, what are you going to do as they get bigger?

A kindle, maybe kept in your underwear drawer, or similarly private location, will keep your choice of reading matter a lot more discreet. Whatever you do about the kindle, you need to accept that you will have to either change your reading habits, or accept that your children will know about them. Trying to deceive children long-term doesn't work, and is likely to be more damaging to the way they regard you than them knowing you read secular books.

I think it's true about now but eventually they will find out, kids always find out, unless you go to lengths to cover it up which it didn't sound like you want to do. But I digress - you got my point.

Re Libby yeah it's an interesting concept! I googled it to find out more when I learnt about it and it's a whole thing. Publishers charge for each digital copy and they keep track somehow...not sure exactly.

Right. So I know that long term, my girls getting bigger , I can’t bring these books in.

But I don’t think it’s deceiving children. We don’t owe children awareness of everything we do. I hide my personal massager and other stuff in a locked, and hope they don’t discover it. I’m not deceiving them. They can have their own when they’re married and I still won’t share with them that I own one as well.

Some things are not shared with children. Reading their diary, or going through their drawers- that’s deceiving them.

That’s fascinating. Will look into it. So I download the app and then sign up for membership?

This is turning into a wider ethical discussion, which maybe wasn't your intention, but I don't think it's the same. They don't know of the existence of a personal massager. That's not deception, that's information withheld.

They see you reading on a regular basis. You are reading completely secular books, but you let them assume it is Jewish books. That is deception, and at some point they will find out.

Incidentally, you could also keep the kindle in a locked box. And if you really do read books only once then throw them out immediately, a kindle will be much better from an environmental perspective. You (obviously) can't use a kindle on Shabbos - that can be your day for reading g only Jewish books.

So regarding the personal massager, I put it away because in the future they will know of its existence and they’ll be like “oh didn’t my mom have this too..” and I’m not looking for that.

Regarding the books I’m reading now- I don’t read those really in front of them..

Yea, kindle is certainly better environmentally
