I usually do a check but my son got checks, bechers, set of beautiful engraved chumashim, sefarim, lulav and esrog holder, watch, hat brush, challah board, challah cover, challah knife (heimish especially the boys make their own kiddush and motzei often).
I think a set of machzorim would also be very appreciated. It also depends on your budget. I've gotten really nice watches for my son's friends on amazon/pz deals in the 60-70 dollar range that are worth in the 120-150 range.
