They are usually around $5000 (at least in the new york area) so it depends. If you have a pretty good idea of what your dealing with you can start different treatments/ therapies but if you are at a loss of therapies arent working then a neuropsych is very valuable. Or if you have the money to do it right away (if not for the $$$ I think everyone would start with it)

Many neuropsychological disorders present the same symptoms but have different causes and the children have different needs regarding 504s and IEPs, so you need to know *precisely* the issue.
For example, children might do homework slowly and it can have different causes such as : dyslexia, another might have slow processing speed, another might be due to ADHD and all these require different types of treatment. That's why having a professional evaluation is necessary, you want the therapy to work for your child and that's only possible if the therapist knows what they present.

Yes, I’m surprised no one mentioned how while a diagnoses might be obvious for a child. Often, you need it documented by a qualified professional in order to get necessary services or for the school to really take you seriously. I think I found the most helpful part of neuropsych at the end of the reports - where the doctor wrote down recommendations to help the child. I was able to give the report to the school and say please accommodate with xyz as the doctor suggested. It’s like saying here’s the hard proof and you have a legitimate reason to make changes/allow certain accommodations even if it’s a bit inconvenient for the teacher or school at a times.

You don’t need a neuropsych eval to diagnose ADHD (or other diagnoses for that matter) there are many more cost effective places to get a diagnosis

Yes but many of those cost effective places do not do a thorough differential diagnosis. Just because they'll write a prescription doesn't mean it's the right one.
