I agree.
The only one I still like is the old trusty custard one.
But 5% is because of the taste and 95% is the nostalgia of eating a custard donut on chanuka.
I’ll take a salad or sushi instead anytime.

Yup! Tasting a piece of each is althe way to do it! The only problem is to cut it into quarters with not losing the filling

Do any Brooklyn people remember when donuts were 6 for $1.00??!!! And I’m 45 for reference, not 80!

The problem is that those donuts are overpriced so your expectations are higher.
The only outcome is to be disappointed!
Someone got me a box of fancy donuts a few yrs ago and they were absolutely beautiful to look at. I don't remember if we liked them better than the regular donuts but they were not bad!
(I once met a lady at a pesach program who was explaining to me that she wasn't happy and the previous yr she also didn't like it, and the previous yr as well... And I was thinking "why don't you stay home?"- same issue as the donuts. You can't be happy to if you're charged more to than it's worth!)

Seriously, I can't be the only one. Anyone else feel the same? They are so overdone, so obnoxiously sweet, and really nothing special. And cost a fortune too.
To me the best donuts are simple ones fried at home. Fresh out of the oil. Plain, or with a light drizzle of glaze or a light dusting of cinnamon sugar.
Am I the only one who feels this way? I am so sick of the hype. I spent $30 on 5 donuts for my family to sample tonight cause I knew I wouldn't have time to make them (or latkes for that matter) tonight. So much drama when the box was opened. But each one ultimately a big MEHHH. |
I didn’t have any donuts last year, and I probably won’t this year either. Honestly? Just give me a Boston cream donut from Dunkin and I’ll be happy (although I’ll probably pay for it later, so it won’t really be worth it)

I once bought a fancy hava java donut for 8 bucks, this was years ago when they just opened. It was horrible. heavy and cheesy and way too sweet. Didn't taste like a donut, more like a ten layer cheesecake. I couldnt finish the whole thing. I've never splurged since. It's custard donuts only for me.

At dinner tonight, my husband said that we won sesame donuts, and someone will have to get them tomorrow. My first thought was “why would anyone put sesame on donuts??” It took me a looooooong time to realize that that’s not what he meant….

The best donuts are the simple one's from Fallsburg Bagels & from the donut man a'h.
And Francoz donuts. Those fancy & dairy one's just don't taste good.
(I was by a store today that has their fancy donuts layed out open on tables. A women sneezed right on to the donuts, I gagged.)

Guess I’ll be the outlier that says I really do love those donuts
Are there flavors I don’t like? Sure, I hate the strawberry flavored donuts, I’m meh about the lemon donuts too
But the lotus? Rosemary? Pistachio??? Yes please!
We buy a few every other night and split it between the family. If there’s a donut that we love, we get it again a different night. Almost tradition lol
But I do look forward to the donuts

The Donut Man! How I miss that place!
That is gross that someone sneezed on the donuts.

Taam Eden (BP) dairy donuts ($5/piece) are delicious! Try the strawberry white chocolate it’s worth every penny. Their donuts are fluffy and made with a generous amount of cream cheese filling, not whipped cream filling like some other places that charge almost double. 10+ for each one I tried.
Sesame (BP/Flatbush/Lakewood + a few more pop-up locations) donuts are also insanely delicious however they were mostly sold out when I was there today. Although I crave their Pistachio (Parve) ($4.75) flavored one all year round and I have a few more favorites. (They range from $3.25 for basic to $5.50 for Dairy) I so far only tasted the caramel this year and it was a 9/10 only cause it’s not Dairy. Lemon Meringue I remember distinctly not liking last year as a sweet donut just doesn’t go with the bitterness of lemon.
Gelbsteins (Lakewood) - pretty good and fluffy too their fillings are made with real strawberries/ pistachios etc, and are more custard like in my opinion. I wasn’t the greatest fan of the pistachio being that I’ve had Sesames in the past so comparing to that, but I’d still rate it as an 8/10.
The White Chocolate (Dairy) was a 10+/10 with a generous filling that tasted like a good creamy white chocolate filling and it had a good hard white chocolate topping (not icing) I think it was $5 but it’s possible it was more as their extra fancy donuts are $5 and are Parve, they also have many of the extra fancy (fancy topping) with a simpler topping for $3.75 and the fillings are the same.

I like some of them as long as they aren't overdone - as in, stick to one filling and one glaze and one topping, with complementary flavors.
It's the cheap ones I can't stand - why waste so many calories for something stale and flavorless.
My homemade filled donuts are way better though - the dough is so perfectly fluffy. I usually fill them with something fancy (and homemade) and then just roll in sugar.
