It’s nice that you have the option. Many pple dont and have to send away.

I agree. For many people out of town, it is public or sending away. And I've seen people choose either with big difficulties. No, not everyone can move. Some have managed to find a way and send the boy to live with family but this is also no option for everyone. But choosing this as an option WHEN there is a local observant school, even far from perfect, isn't something I would do at that age.

THAT SAID this is not something that started a generation ago.

Please don't send him unless you have no option. If your local Yeshiva is decent keep him there. We sent our son at 16 when his class dissntegrated. Hes doing very well but it's really hard.

I grew up in a OOT community with no local option.
The boys, including my brothers, were all sent away.
It was fine. I look at all the boys I grew up with, and my brothers, and they've all turned out really well. I don't think its the end of the world and it's a valid option sometimes.

But I refuse to move back to my hometown for that exact reason. I think it's healthier for them to be home for high school. We've settled in a mid sized community with several yeshiva options- even if my son dorms locally, I want him to be able to come home at night if he needs or wants.

14 year old boys belong home with mama. Dorms are a breeding ground for problems.
The system of sending them out at this age is broke. Look at all the guys weve lost from the last generation to see the fall out.
I love tomatoes.
Go ahead
