I need a machine for mixing dough (challah, pizza, etc). I have been using a bread machine until now, just for the mixing. But it broke. I'm considering a kitchen aid, but they are expensive... is it worth it? If you have one, why do you like it or dislike it?

And, are there other options?

I have a kitchen aid (23 years old).

It mixes nicely, and will do fine with a bread machine amount of dough. However, motor not strong enough for large amount of dough.
It is also VERY heavy.
I mix my dough by hand as it can handle the quantity I need for my f a mily.

I would get a bosch as it handles 5 lb woth ease and is much lighter.
Downside - is even more expensive, a pain to wash.

Be sure to check the strength of the motor. Kitchenaid has a variety which look the same but with different strengths.

AFAIK a kitchen aid can’t mix up 5 lbs challah dough. It’s also a giant klutz, even heavier than a Bosch.

I put the entire bosh machine in a garbage bag. I make a hole in the bag where I connect the bowl to the machine. I then connect the bowl to the machine on top of the bag. When I am done I just wash the bowl and put the garbage bag in the garbage. The machine stays mostly clean.

Most appliance stores will say Bosch for dough, kitchen aid for cakes/whip eggs etc...
It's just what you use it most for

ETA, before pesach one of the magazines interviewed a couple of stores, for pesach and whipping snow, they all say kitchen aid, noone buys a bosch for pesach. For dough and during the year, most people go for Bosch.

Kitchen aid is awesome but cant hold full batch of challa dough . If you bake 5-6 pounds of flour at a time and your main need is challa dough do not buy Kitchen aid

I can’t believe people would buy a KitchenAid for one week of pesach

Do you do a lot of baking? I love my kitchen aid, but I mix challah by hand.

I love my Magic Mill. Mixes challah dough beautifully and I've had it for 20 years and make a lot of challah, cinnamon buns, etc. I also have a 35 year old Kitchen Aid (bli ayin hara - may it live and be well for many more!) and use that for cakes, cookies, whipped cream, etc. My husband gifted me the Magic Mill years ago because the Kitchen Aid was not big enough for a full batch of challah dough.

Why not? It's a once in a lifetime investment and well worth it for those like me that make everything from scratch on Pesach. I got one a few years ago Black Friday for less than $250. I BH have several married kids and everyone comes home for Pesach. We are a full house and go through a LOT of baked goods and I am so happy to be able to feed my kids and grandkids their favorite Pesach cakes, cookies, brownies and parve ice cream. The Kitchen Aid has made the prep much easier and faster for me than the old electric hand mixer I had used in the past.

I hear I also make pesach for a crowd I just dont have that kind of $ for a week and manage with a hand mixer but I hear it may be worth it for some. I also would have no where to store it its huge

Me too. Kitchen Aid fan. I don't have a tiny apartment kitchen but the kitchen isn't that big; still, I keep it on the counter.

Another one here that makes challah by hand and uses my KitchenAid for everything else like pizza dough, regular old white bread, cakes, whipping, etc.

Kitchen Aid is a lovely machine but useless for challah bakers. I got an Ankarsrum and love it.

I just went from kitchen aid to Bosch and it’s a game changer for challah! If you are spending the money then go for the Bosch.
