Tomchei Shabbos application

If you receive tomchei shabbos, what kinds of things do you receive each week? Is it hard to get accepted? What kind of things do they ask? I want to apply, but I am embarrassed. I am hoping it will only be a few months until we get back on our feet. I am too ashamed to ask my family for help and it will only cause shalom bayis issues. I have a few kids at home and paying tuition, we don't have money for basic necessities at this time.

We live OOT and they have multiple programs here. Food boxes have standard basics. Other places give credit in a specific grocery store. We only got boxes a few weeks and it had different things each week. Often was: Challah, grape juice, some vegetables, chicken.

Honestly, when you need food it didn't matter what we got. It all helps.

I used to deliver as a kid in Brooklyn. And I remember there being Challah, Chicken, Eggs, Orange Juice, Grape Juice, Carrots, Squash, some cans of sorts and possibly some more fruits or vegetables. And then many weeks there were different kinds of candies/cookies/cake for Shabbos.

I also live in Queens and have been getting from them for quite some time. I don't know if the application process has changed, but when I started there weren't any forms - it was just a matter of having someone vouch for your situation/financial need. In my case a relative had called in to try to get us help, but I would guess that they may ask for a Rabbi or someone in the community to vouch for you (I could be totally wrong on that by the way, that's just my guess). No one has ever asked us for tax records or bank statements or anything like that.

In terms of food, type varies week to week and quantity depends on household size. In our case (family of six) there are usually challah/challah rolls, raw chickens or meat (closer to chagim it's meat, generally it's chicken), potatoes and/or rice, sometimes apple juice or grape juice, sometimes cereal, often some type of nosh, fruit, most weeks there's a bag or two of either barley or beans or pasta, sometimes take out food (think a container of soup or a pan of rice), plus often some type of canned goods (canned veggies or fruit or tuna). A dozen eggs some weeks as well. I'm sure I am skipping things, like I said, it varies from week to week. Basically it helps with making Shabbos plus gives us a bit more for during the week. This is separate from the things they add on closer to the holidays, like honey or pomegranates before Rosh Hashanah. They also are a huge help pre-Pesach.

I don't think they are looking to turn people down - as long as you need it, I think you should be able to get it IM"H.

Just wanted to mention, there are kosher food pantries around Queens if you want to look into that as well. You may need to call to double check that the hours on their websites are current, though hopefully they are =

Out of towner here. Our TS delivers as if it's a regular grocery order, a huge chesed when living in a place where everyone knows everyone. My own kids don't even know it's not a delivery that I've shopped for and paid.
They deliver chicken, cutlets, ground meat or goulash, fish, salmon, eggs...

For yomom tovim like Rosh hashana and Shavuos, Purim, they sent a bit extra, usually meat rolls. Pesach & Succos you order whatever you need for the ENTIRE chag and they cover, including married kids and grandchildren that come to you. Not sure about other guests, guess one would have to ask.
