Hi I teach tenth grade and next week I have a free lesson day. One day that I can teach whatever I want; it doesn’t have to be related to my subject.
Fellow teachers or non teachers you have a lesson for me or a topic that I can look into. It’s general studies so I’m not looking for hashkufa topics. Any suggestions will be really appreciated.

Personal safety while driving, walking, shopping, etc.
How to write a thank you note--and TO write them!
How to balance a checkbook.
How to do the Heimlich maneuver.
How to say "Where is the ladies' room?" (probably THE most useful and necessary foreign phrase they will ever need) and "Thank you" in five or ten languages.
How to read a subway or bus map.

Time zones. Inflation. Business ethics. How to read body language. Talk about current events. Debate controversial topics. Manners and etiquette that have been forgotten in this generation (like phone manners for example)

I liked to bring a question with multiple choice options. I gave them a minute to discuss with a neighbor and then they had to share their neighbors opinion with the class.
I let other classmates weigh in with their opinions and it was a lively class discussion.
For example:
Question: which would you rather buy and why?
1. A car with comfortable seats
2. A car with a pretty color
3. A car with a good engine
4. A cool sports car
Obviously this is not a topic of interest for tenth grade girls.
But having such a conversation teaches them how to weigh pros and cons, how to prioritize, how to listen to your friends opinion, how to debate with facts and convincing arguments and tone. And it’s fun.

Last time (years ago) I had this, I found a great lesson on the Fibonacci sequence and its relevance in nature, architecture, and art. I found a really nice slideshow online and I love the opportunity to make something math-related more interesting rather than just the mechanics of math.

It's almost like would you rather game...?
Would you rather be liked or respected?
Can money truly buy happiness? Why or why not?
Would you rather have the ability to change the past or the ability to see into the future?
Would you rather always know the truth, even if it’s painful, or live in blissful ignorance?
