My teenage daughter has been suffering with low grade anxiety. The doctor felt it would be good to put her on meds to help her get through the end of high school.
First they tried Proxac, they said it takes 4 weeks to get into the system.
It's been such a hard 4 weeks. She was getting slightly depressed from it, and it totally curbed her appetite.
So the doc said skip this and let's move on to Zoloft.
Now she is working up on this meds. I don't know what on earth went on, but I have had an , crying girl for the last 2 weeks. She is so tired , I'm not sure if it's messing up her sleep.
Slowly getting worst.
How do I know she has to get used to and what is starting to be absurd already.
Forget all these meds, and I'll deal with the anxiety.
I don't think there is any other anti anxiety medication family left to try...
Any advice as the mother?

BTDT. Dr gave me Zoloft, I thought it was gonna kill me. I stopped taking it and then started Klonopin. It was life saving. I took it for the better part of 2 years and then weaned myself.

I know meds can take time to work and side effects are normal, but to a certain degree. Take cues from your daughter.

There are lots of other drug families to try! But what dosage did they start her at?

Also, did you start her on supplements?

Sometimes, the doc needs to give tranquilisers until the meds kicked in, to help with the terrible side effects.

There’s a lot more to try so don’t give up yet. But yes side effects are a beast.

And what Ruchi said - sometimes doctors will prescribe benzos to help with side effects.

Also I’ve been told it can take 6-12 weeks (minimum 6) to see how it’s working.

Of course you can stop it sooner if it’s awful.

I’m sorry your daughter is going through this.

Sometimes it is impossible to stick it out without tranquiliser.

Though, please be aware that anti depressants and anti anxiety medication can l"o cause heightened risk of suicide in young people.
Unfortunately, several people in the Jewish community have taken their lives whilst on these meds.
If you can find a compassionate, caring and supportive therapist, it would be a better option.

One needs to get to the root of the problem why your daughter is anxious and to help her heal, whether this is related to a past trauma or something else that's worrying her.

You need a good psychiatrist that is easily available in between appointments.

And if she's open to it then therapy can be helpful.

I would also try alternative things like craniosacral therapy and acupuncture

Have you tried therapy?
Is this a good psychiatrist or PCP? If you need to go the meds route, it takes trail and error and it's an art. It should be done by a psychiatrist.
