My 9 year old son is suddenly waking up at least once a night (sometimes more) to use the bathroom. He never used to do this. He is not constipated AFAIK. What else can be causing this?

Type 1 diabetes? Strep? Pandas?

Pinworms? Although waking once a night is considered normal and might not be an issue. But you can go to the pediatrician to rule anything out.

That's a scary thought. Any way I can test his blood sugar levels without doing full bloodwork? Would doctor pinprick in the office? He is impossible when it comes to blood tests...

If you suspect diabetes you need to do full bloodwork even if he’s impossible. There is no way around something as serious as that. Trust me I know. I have a kid who needed a year of medical tests and it was torture for all of us but it was too bad and we did it anyway.

My doc does pinpricks at the office to test blood sugar. If within normal range why put them through a full blood test?

A urine sample with a dip stick test in the office can screen blood sugar levels, if abnormal they would do a blood test

Why’s everyone jumping to diabetes?? Waking up once during the night is normal.

Right?
When you hear hoofbeats think horses, not zebras.

Not a good indicator of diabetes. Not that I think diabetes is the answer here. But if the doctor suspects and wants to go that route the only responsible path is a full blood panel.

Thanks for calming me down. It's hard to know about the day because he is in school for so much of the day. The only reason I'm concerned is because it's sudden onset - he's been sleeping through the night without waking to use the bathroom for years already. I'll ask him about the day and see if he noticed any difference in the amount of times he uses the bathroom. If it persists for a few more nights I will take him to the doctor.

Definitely not strep since he's currently on antibiotics.
