No frum publisher would take it but it’s about a frum family and geared for mature frum adults.
I don’t whitewash anything.
Amazon self publishing does not allow you to sell it anywhere else, you need to make your own layout and cover and you can expect to make $300 a year. |
Thanks for this info.
My 12 year old really wants to publish her fantasy book and it looks like we may have to self publish.
How much should we expect it to cost us?

I don't think most Jewish bookstores would take it.
I don't read romances unless super clean like the original P&P and actually Harry Potter is less of an issue to me because the characters are not Jewish and therefore it's foreign and I don't identify with the characters. And don't let my kids read it.
If you made a cleaner, cheap, ebook version would totally read it. No negiah before or after, or physical attraction description.
As it is, my suggestion to you would be to make it something a non jew would read and then you can sell physical copies. Not dirtier, just understandable by a wider audience. I don't think most people who don't buy real romances would buy a Jewish version.
Other than library books, most books people own end up being read by their kids eventually.

It depends how long it is. But try querying it first with a traditional agent. Reedsy.com is a great resource

I'll keep you in mind for an ARC. I did have it beta-ed a few times and sensitivity read. It needs editing

I didn't think about translating it yet but maybe that would be a good idea. I would need someone to check grammar for me.

I think you’re better off marketing this as a Pride and Prejudice variation than as a frum novel. It’s much more likely to find its audience that way.

For those who wouldn't purchase a book that has kissing only after marriage, may I ask why?
Everyone knows Yaakov kissed Rachel before marriage-and even though there are explanations why that was "okay" and I think it is obvious that teenagers (no matter how sheltered they are) know that married couples kiss. Why is that a problem? Frankly I would have much more of a problem with the "My protagonist thinks about reaching out to touch his hand but always decides against it" if this is before marriage (which presumably it is). This can get people thinking in a non-kosher way a lot more. A kiss? Not a huge deal.

How is the original P&P so clean? I mean, I don't have a problem with it, but you have Wickman almost succeeding in getting Georgiana to elope with him and Lydia lives with Wickman before they are married.

I assume the problem is the hirhurim caused by graphic description.
Like, if it just said "and they happily kissed" and the scene ended there, fine.
But romance books tend to go into detail, where his tongue is, where her hands are, what she's thinking...and more. The explicit detail is a problem for many.

Got it. If it is that graphic, then of course I understand.
