I wonder if I should change the title to "orthodox romance - a lost cause?" I never assumed this would make me rich but I thought there was an audience lol

Following. I’m working on a historical novel.
No frum publisher would take it but it’s about a frum family and geared for mature frum adults.
I don’t whitewash anything.
Amazon self publishing does not allow you to sell it anywhere else, you need to make your own layout and cover and you can expect to make $300 a year.

I would read it myself but I if I’m buying a novel and keeping it on the shelf I want it to be something my teens can read as well. Mostly what I read is from the library because books are expensive and the frum libraries wouldn’t buy a book like that and I can never find the self published frum books in my regular library system.

What is your book about? |
It's an Israeli spin on Pride and Prejudice. My Elizabeth is a mixed race Sephardic dating leumi girl and my Darcy is a rich Ashkenazi guy with yichus, so opposites collide. And as I said, shomer negia until they're married.

Let's say it like this, if you allow your teens to read secular books like Harry Potter than my novel shouldn't be a problem. My protagonist thinks about reaching out to touch his hand but always decides against it.
What do you think of a special edition without the kiss?

I’m not letting anything from unknown sources into my house without checking it out first, but I just don’t have the time for that.
In other words, if it comes from a self-published source, it's not coming home with me or my kids. |
But you would let a romance book into your home? It sounds like the same standards the publishers have are the ones you have.
In which case you can't be her target audience.

Thanks! I'm waiting to hear back from one more secular agent (publishing Israel related stuff is tough these days) and if that doesn't pan out I'll go the self publish route. Eying Purim 2026

I don't know where it stands relative to Instagram, but there's an active Orthodox presence on Reddit. r/Judaism, specifically. There might be space for a Hebrew translation in the Israeli market, too, but I'd guess you want to see it succeed in English first.

I'd read that! And I definitely think you could find an audience in Israel- Pride and Prejudice was popular among well-read dati teens I knew when I was that age.

I think you will find that people that dont bring romantic books into their homes wont bring this in, but those who read all types of secular books will definitely read this.
It sounds like a fun read. I think the modern orthodox/dati leumi communities will read it self published or not.
Personally, I almost never read jewish books, but if I find one that sounds amazing, I sometimes do. This sounds like it could be on my reading list

I would buy both of them (someone else said that she's writing a mature book) on amazon in kindle form.
I personally think we do need these types of books. I find the regular frum books so unrealistic how they portray any relationship.

As of now I don’t. I’m not fully opposed to it but
1- I would take it out of the library or borrow it it’s not something I would own because I think that gives it a higher level of validation and
2- I have an easier time allowing something secular that I don’t 100% approve of then something frum. It’s easier to compartmentalize, this is them this is us when it’s not Jewish.
To your last question, having not read it it’s hard for me to say if the romance would be a level I’m ok with or not. I’m not opposed to the idea but would have to read it first.

That’s a one-click for me! P&P variants are a huge market and the fandom is rabid. If you need a beta reader, I would be delighted to get my hands on this!!
