Sorry for posting so close to Shabbat.
We are new-ish to NYC with young kids and I'm confused about whether or not the city-run 3k program is something we should be looking into. I had assumed it was only for children who will (eventually) attend NYC public school, but it looks like there are some Jewish schools that offer city-funded 3K seats? Like Darchei in Far Rockaway and a few others.
Also, if this is a city-wide program, does that mean the kids in (for example) Darchei's 3K program have varied backgrounds and aren't all from Orthodox families?
If anyone can shed some light on this, I'd be much obliged!

3k and prek have been made available for everyone in the past few years. The Jewish schools will sometimes have random children applying to their schools but will gear them back to schools more appropriate for them. So definitely apply!!

Yes some yeshivas offer 3k. Mainly boy schools. officially anyone can apply. You need to apply to darchei for Nursery/Kindergarten and then apply with the city for 3/4k and chose Darchei as your slot. Darchei chooses who is in the class so not everyone gets the 3k slot (they have other N and K classes not 3k) but everyone in the 3/4k class is a Darchei (frum) child.

Thanks to both of you, that's super helpful!
Should I assume then that it only makes sense to apply for a 3K seat at a school where you'd want your child to continue on after the 3k and 4k years are over? Like you wouldn't apply to Darchei intending to stay there for 3k and 4K but transfer to a different school for pre1a/kindergarten?

You just apply to the school itself. You tell the school that you prefer the 3-k class. Many frum schools in NYC have the 3-k class. You should only apply to the school where you plan to send to elementary school otherwise you migh have a hard time getting into a school.

Right, look for a school that you plan on sending in the long run. Their Preschool should usually have a 3k program hopefully
