I'm looking to self publish my first novel in the near future and I want to be very strategic in how I launch it. Since it is a romance story (shomer negia) the frum publishers don't want it but I'm wondering if the fact that it'd be self published would deter you from buying it. Do you only buy books from jewish book stores? I'm trying to figure out the best ways to market and sell it.

I don't think the knowledge that it's self published would be the issue, it's more how would anyone be aware your book exists.

I disagree, I trust a few Publishers to have certain standards which I appreciate for my home.

I’m not letting anything from unknown sources into my house without checking it out first, but I just don’t have the time for that.

In other words, if it comes from a self-published source, it's not coming home with me or my kids.

What if it had a letter of approval from an author you liked? I don't know if I can find a rav to read it and write an approval because it's geared to women. I also think of having trigger warnings in the beginning. There's attraction but their first kiss is only after the wedding

What do you disagree about? If she self publishes, how would anyone know the book even exists?

Well, the plan is to advertise it so people will know about it Wink

A social site or news site?

People also advertise on popular whatsapp statuses

Maybe give it to frum influencers for free, particularly those who post about books sometimes. They might mention that they read it on shabbos or are excited to read it and that goes even further than a paid ad

I'm so sorry I don't have Whatsapp so I don't know which exact ones! You can look into contacting Jewish Content Network. They arrange for advertising on a lot of jewish platforms.

I respectfully disagree with the notion that knowing it is self-published is not a concern. It is an issue.

Self-published books hardly end up in my home.

I, personally, and not speaking for anyone else here, would not consider a book with a kiss in it to be 'Jewish'/frum and would not buy it. I would read it maybe maybe from the library but I try hard not to read not frum books.

Do self published books make any money? How many copies can one hope to sell without a publisher to push sales and promote?

It really depends on the genre and how well it's marketed. Unfortunately nowadays many publishers expect you to market it yourself anyway. That being said, some people make no money and others can quit their day jobs.

That's a good point, I missed that post before. I wouldn't either purchase a book that has kissing, even between a married couple.
