I am excitedly planning a trip to Israel and would be booking a hotel for the first few nights in Jerusalem. Our flight lands early in the morning and I am considering paying for an extra night in the hotel so we can go straight there with our luggage, shower, nap if needed etc or even just use hotel amenities like pool if we would find it relaxing instead of having to wait until check in. My question is though, is this a common thing that hotels that cater to foreign vacationers are used to or will they cancel my reservation if I don't show up the previous evening? I don't think I can quite call up different hotels and pose this question in Hebrew!

All hotels have English speaking staff. You can send an email or make a phone call and speak English. Don't worry

Great idea, if you pay in advance and tell them that you dont know when you are checking in, it may be at 9am, they wont cancel your reservation.
Or ask for early check in with a reduced charge.
Or just show up early, put your luggage in their luggage room and go rest by the pool. Shower in the pools shower room, if you ask nicely, they will give you shampoos and soaps and towels. Buy breakfast at the hotel (most allow it) or go eat at a local coffee shop - in Israel they open early (as opposed to Europe).
Most if not all hotels allow you to use the facilities before check in on the same day. And will send your phone a message when the room is ready (early).
A smile and charming demeanor go a long way.

Email in any language can be google translated.
I did this when I traveled in Europe, I google translated simple messages and sent the email in both languages.

Use Artzeinu Tours. They get you a discount and work with these types of situations all the time. They speak and handle all the hotel details for you.

If you book an extra night to make sure you have room and breakfast when you arrive state you arrive at ben gurion with flight nr XYZ on XYZ date. **Check carefully since you may leave USA on X date and arrive in Israel on a Y date**
You can always *request* early check in without additional payment but there's no guarantee.
What you will always be able to leave luggage at hotel until check in time.
