There's been a trend that people use the phrase "tri state area" to mean "in town" (another annoying phrase imo). For example, there's a thread now asking for a boiler price in the tri state area. Sometimes people ask for house prices in the tri state area. Or good doctors. It goes on an on.

I know people are trying to be anonymous but don't people realize that the tri state area includes Jewish places like Albany, Rochester, Waterbury, and probably others I don't know where the cost of living and good is completely different than that of NYC, Westchester, Lakewood, 5t, etc?

Is it ignorance? Just another way of being NYC/Lakewood area- centric? Or another ridiculous level of super anonymity?

I think from now on I'm going to answer tri state area questions with answers relative to Albany. Just because.

Ok, that's my pet peeve. Got it out there.

Thoughts on this? Or any pet peeves of your own?

I don't think the term is intended to apply to the whole of all 3 states, but rather to the areas surrounding NYC.

See this article. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/....._area

(Side point, but NY/NJ/CT is not the only tristate area. There are others as well.)

When people ask for info without posting a location. Duh you’re from the tri state area Rolling Eyes

And yes I live in NY but hate the mentality that the world revolves around me.

So funny. Until I came to this site, I thought it meant Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana. Because that's what we call it in that area.

Ok so you do that, and any time anyone asks a question about "Methodist hospital", no location given, I'll reply about any one of the THOUSANDS of hospitals with the same name around the country, many also in large frum areas.

It is not ignorance.
It is that certain area centric.
They believe this site is all from there.
There are no frum jews elsewhere. How could there be?

Same exact thing happens when people post "Looking for .... in Israel" when they really mean Jerusalem
I know you think Israel is small but you really don't want to travel from Maalot Dafna to Beer Sheva for an OBGYN or dentist.

The NY tri state area usually refers to the area right around NYC, it would include Monsey, Teaneck, Passaic, Long Island and western Connecticut. It wouldn’t even include Lakewood.

Hmm. I think even outside of the frum world the NY "tristate area" is used to refer to the parts of said states roughly in commuting distance from NYC. Kind of shorthand for the greater NY area. But you can always post good doctors near Niagara just for kicks.

That wouldn’t even make sense, they are hours apart and are so different price wise, and you don’t exactly get a plumber from Monsey if you live in Lakewood. It actually looks like it’s people not from the area who don’t understand how far apart and different it all is.

The best tristate area is the one that includes Danville.

No one within the tristate area thinks it’s all a hop skip and jump, and many of us loathe the 2 hour travel times. So I really doubt it’s the ny/nj people asking.
